Church Benches

My friend, Kevin came down to Haiti for about a week recently to complete a few projects that had been put off by the pandemic. We were able to build twenty benches for Pastor Savine’s church in just 2 1/2 days. This was an accomplishment that amazed us both and quite honestly, I’m not sure we could do it again. The benches that these were replacing were termite infested, unsafe, and, uncomfortable.

There was a time in ministry, I seriously questioned humanitarian work such as the building of benches. It didn’t seem right to call this type of work “ministry.” Our examples of Jesus meeting people at their needs such as healing, or feeding thousands are great examples of how he would minister to their physical needs and then their spiritual needs also. My viewpoints have begun to change. The malnutrition clinic is a perfect example of how humanitarian efforts can be a platform for the gospel and ultimately discipleship. Certainly, I’m not implying that we must have humanitarian programs to present the gospel. We must be prepared to share the gospel anywhere and anytime.

These benches that Kevin and I completed will not only be a great resource for church services, but also medical clinics.  The benches are about the people, the relationships that will be built, the physical needs that will be met on them and of course the gospel. In ministry, we always try to let the gospel be the idea that feeds all of our ministry.~ Troy
