Caring Through Covid Fund

We are contacting you because you made an application to the Lanarkshire Carers Caring Through Covid Fund in February 2021, which was unsuccessful.  In recognition of this, we would like to offer you the opportunity to submit an application for our Caring Through Covid Fund Phase 2.

It is important to note that your previous application may have been unsuccessful due to not meeting the criteria set by the fund. Any new application must also meet the same criteria, so please pay particular attention to the guidelines detailed below.

Please do not share the link included in this communication, as this fund is only open to previously unsuccessful applicants at this time.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must be adult carers (aged 18 and over) living in Lanarkshire who are in a current caring role. If you are a young carer (under 18 or over 18 and still accessing education) please contact our partner organisation, Action for Children on 01698 258801 (North Lanarkshire) or 01698 891385 (South Lanarkshire) who will be able to provide you with further information on available grant funding for young carers.

The carer must provide unpaid care to a family member, partner, relative or friend who needs help to manage a long-term condition, disability, physical or mental ill health or addiction. Please note: this grant fund is not open to foster carers, paid care workers or paid personal assistants. Applications can be considered from kinship carers of children with additional care and support needs.

The fund will target those carers who are less likely to access traditional services, those who are under the most stress and those in most need of a short break from caring at this time. The carer must be able to make the necessary arrangements for the break themselves.

Types of Breaks

The Caring Through Covid Fund is intended to be responsive to the current needs and challenges faced by carers, assisting them to take a much-needed break from caring. Carers are encouraged to think about opportunities they would enjoy doing, that can be taken in line with the current coronavirus restrictions. Some examples of short break opportunities include (but are not limited to):
  • Arts and craft materials
  • Audiobooks and equipment
  • Musical equipment and lessons
  • Cooking and baking equipment
  • Exercise equipment and/or virtual personal training sessions
  • Reading materials and/or subscriptions
  • TV entertainment passes/subscriptions such as Netflix, Disney+, Now TV etc.
  • Mobile phones
  • Cameras
  • Televisions
  • IT equipment such as iPads, tablets, laptops, or PCs
  • Model making kits and equipment
  • Gaming consoles and subscriptions
  • Gardening equipment
  • Takeaway meals
  • Cycling equipment
  • Walking equipment such as shoes, waterproof clothing etc.
  • Power tools
Applicants are encouraged to think creatively about how this fund could be used to provide a break from caring, including regular breaks over an extended period rather than funding a one-off opportunity.

The funding can also be used to pay for joint activities with the person(s) being cared for, but the carer must be able to demonstrate how they will benefit from this opportunity.
The fund does not set restrictions on the nature or length of the short break opportunity however due to current coronavirus restrictions we may be unable to consider applications for certain things, including overnight breaks away from home.

Whilst we appreciate this fund will help carers financially to access support, we cannot award funding to help cover the cost of more expensive purchases. This includes deposit costs, items deemed excessive or out with the overall aim of this funding. We encourage carers to think sensibly and realistically about the support required and if this funding is appropriate.

Applicants will not be able to use this funding to cover the cost of things they have already purchased. We advise all applicants not to commit to any purchase until we have advised that their application is successful, and the funding has been received in their nominated bank account. Lanarkshire Carers will not be held liable for any loss incurred by carers because of making a purchase without the funding available to cover the cost.

Only one application per household and per cared-for person(s) will be accepted. The main carer will usually be given priority/the first refusal.

Capped Amounts

Please Note: The amount awarded will be capped so if you are applying for i.e £300 you may receive an amount lesser than what you have applied for.

Applications that do not meet the criteria for this fund will not be considered by panel. This includes:

  • Breaks away from home
  • Breaks for the benefit of the person being cared for, rather than the carer (the carer must directly benefit from the item or activity).
  • Activities or items not deemed appropriate for this fund such as essential home items, white goods, bedding etc.
  • Activities or items deemed excessive and out with the overall aim of this fund.
  • Any Carer who has had funding in the past 12 months.
Please note: Lanarkshire Carers do have other funding streams that carers can apply to for the above.
Applications should be completed by Friday 16 July 2021.
All applicants need an email address to process their application. Notification will be sent to you after the date closing date of 16 July.  Please do not contact us before this date.
