Forming 'bubbles' over Christmas

On 25 December there will be small changes in the COVID-19 rules to allow people to spend Christmas together, Christmas bubbles can be formed to help reduce loneliness and isolation. You can meet with your bubble in a home, outdoors or in a place of worship. You do not have to form a bubble if you do not want to.

  • 8 people from 3 households (plus children under 12 years of age from the three households) are the legal maximum.
  • Minimise the distance you travel. The law allows you to travel within Scotland, but not to or from outside Scotland; to form a Christmas bubble. You must return home on Christmas Day.
  • If you don’t form a bubble you must follow the rules in the local authority area you live in

From 26 December (Boxing Day) at 00:01am, mainland Scotland will have Level 4 restrictions applied and will go into lockdown level four rules for at least three weeks.
  • From Boxing Day, in line with existing law, travel across local authority boundaries between areas in Level 3 or 4 will not be legal.

Please remember, unpaid carers are exempt from visiting and travel restrictions. You can still travel outwith your local area if you are providing care or support to someone for a vulnerable person, even if they are not part of your bubble.
