I've appeared on a couple of shows recently, so if you're interested in hearing the sound of my voice, go check out:

I'm also in the process of narrating another story for PodCastle; look for that later this year. (You can find links to my previous narrations here.)

Meet Me at... Emerald City Comic Con

If you're in the Seattle area attending ECCC on Sunday, March 15th, and don't have any plans at 8:00AM, how about joining me for a writing workshop?

This year, the con is partnering with local nonprofit Clarion West (I'm an alum of their six-week summer workshop) to offer three different classes:

  • Friday: Nancy Kress, "Writing in Scenes"
    • Is your story dramatic?  Not melodramatic, but constructed and written to best capture readers’ (and editors’!) interest.  Often, the critical difference between salable fiction and the almost-but-not-quite-there manuscript is dramatization—and dramatization, for the fiction writer no less than for the playwright, means constructing successful scenes.  This workshop will use a combination of lecture, hand-outs, and brief writing sessions to cover scene construction, effective description within a scene, use of dialogue, different types of scenes, scene order,  and that eternal problem, exposition.  Learn how to give your story page-turning appeal.
  • Saturday: Jasmine Silvera, "The Action at the Heart of Your Character"
    • It’s great to know what your characters look like, but more important is how they will act and react to events in your story. Explore three strategies to help determine what motivates your characters from the inside out, and how to use those motivations to drive your plot.
  • Sunday: Curtis Chen, "3 WAYS TO MAKE AN IDEA INTO A STORY"
    • For many writers, the big question isn't where to get ideas--it's how to turn an idea into a story. We'll talk about three approaches--starting with context, character, or conflict--and use exercises to help you start writing with purpose.

We'll be at the Sheraton Grand Seattle Hotel, in the Ravenna Room. Each workshop is $15 (NOTE: you must also have a con pass to participate). Sign up here:

New Story #SOON

As you know, <<First Name>>, I have promised to get more short fiction out this year, and so next week there will be a new story for my Curious Fictions subscribers and an original haiku and flash fiction piece for my Patreon supporters, based on their prompts. Find me on one or both platforms to read stories that have never before existed in this world!

I never know what Carey Mulligan's going to do next but I am here for it
