You are receiving this because you were either on our distribution list last year or have joined the PTA or the PTA’s New Parent Communications list this year. Our first order of business is to clean up our distribution list, so if you no longer have kids a Border Star and don’t wish to see these emails anymore, please unsubscribe before reading any further!

This past Thursday was Open House.  We had a really great turnout for our Children’s House families especially. PTA president Jessica Hutton welcomed parents and gave them some info about what our PTA does and how parents can get involved.  Mr. Rhyne provided parents with the school’s newly-minted mission and vision statements, as well as some of the pillars of the strategic plan for meeting achievement and growth goals. Ms. Decker addressed parents to remind us about some of the policies, such as tardies and drop-off and pick-up procedures. After these presentations, parents had a chance to visit with their child(ren)’s teacher(s) to learn more about a typical school day and the teacher’s philosophy and expectations of children and families.

If you weren’t able to attend, feel free to email your child’s teacher to ask for the basic information they presented at Open House.

The Spirit Wear store is open! Order T-shirts, hoodies, and jerseys at our spirit wear store. The store is open until Sept. 13. Note that we need 12 of any style for that order to complete. If we don't reach 12 items, we'll refund you. Spirit wear will be delivered to the school, and sent home with your child.

Thanks to your generous donations, PTA will provide a spirit wear T-shirt for every student in school. They can wear them on spirit wear Fridays, as well as on field trips to help teachers and chaperones keep track of them! They are scheduled to be delivered the first week of September.

There’s still time to become a member, and it’s only $5 a person! Joining the PTA gives you a voice. As an active PTA member, you can have a say in how the PTA raises and spends money, and who should be nominated and serve in our annual officer elections.

This year, PTA meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month (except January) in the school cafeteria. Our first meeting this year will be Thursday, September 5.

Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm, the meeting starts at 6 pm. LINC will provide child care from 6 pm through meeting's end. Please RSVP on the Dragon Parents Facebook group, and remember to bring your own plates and flatware to help cut waste!

If you are not on Facebook, you can email your RSVP to

Our annual Back-to-School BBQ will be Friday, September 20 at 6 pm. The BBQ gives families a chance to get to know one another, or catch up again after the summer. We provide the hot dogs and entertainment, families provide sides and desserts (each class will be assigned a category); and the school provides us tables, trays, cups, and use of all the facilities. We will need approximately 40 volunteers to help set up, grill, man (or woman) the food line, and wash dishes afterward. Look for a sign-up poster and a Sign-up genius link soon to volunteer!

Throughout the year, we’ll have a few restaurant nights as small fundraisers for the PTA. The first will be Thursday, September 12, at the Brookside Panera. Mention Border Star when you order, between 4 pm and 8 pm, and Panera will donate 20% of the cost of your meal to our PTA.

Last year, every class sent home a Wednesday folder with students, which included a weekly “Principal’s Page,” information from the classroom teacher, and information from the PTA and other groups about upcoming events. Mr. Rhyne does not plan to send home weekly newsletters this year (in part to save paper), so teachers can now send home information as they see fit. So parents, check back packs everyday—not just Wednesdays! The PTA will occasionally send home paper flyers for our events, but we will also try to cut back on printing.  Look for these other means of communication throughout the year:

  • PTA bulletin board (outside of Rm 003 by the back door near the playground)—we will post a calendar, which will be updated monthly, as well as flyers for upcoming events

  • Flyers—we will still hang flyers and posters for events around the school.  When you walk by, snap a picture of it with your smart phone so you can always have the info handy.

  • Phone blasts—Mr Rhyne likes using the phone blast system. We will send important PTA info through him on that system as well.

  • PTA website—In the past, this site has been used primarily as a landing page for memberships, special spirit wear purchases, and donations. But we’re going to try to keep it updated with important event info this year as well.

  • PTA meetings—Attending meetings will be the best way to get the inside scoop on school happenings.

  • These PTA emails—Don’t worry, we won’t flood your inbox.  But we’ll try to get the most import stuff out this way.

  • Facebook parent page — This closed (and unofficial) Facebook group is open to all parents to discuss school and community issues, ask questions, and build community. You'll need to provide a child's teacher's name to join.
