Recommendations from the Academic Senate

Recommendations for the Virtual Classroom

Faculty are encouraged to clearly state camera expectations in syllabus and review these expectations the first day of class or even post on Canvas prior to the start of the semester. If camera usage is required on certain days the rationale should be included in the syllabus. If faculty do require the use of camera there needs to be a procedure for exceptions. Faculty are encouraged to create class expectations at the start of semester (helps to discuss/explain why cameras would be useful) and consider alternative ways of involvement to demonstrate presence and create community. Faculty concerned about privacy issues may consider suggesting the use of avatars. Faculty may need to secure student permission if recording lectures with students visible. Alternative solutions (e.g., virtual backgrounds, school-appropriate profile pictures) should be encouraged as access to technology allows.

Recommendations for Assessment

While the Respondus Monitor issue has been fixed, Services for Students with Disabilities still recommends flexibility with testing. If faculty require cameras for assessment then those dates should be included in the syllabus so that students can make plans in advance. Faculty are encouraged to consider shorter time periods or multiple attempts to mitigate some technology concerns. Faculty should also consider alternatives if there are identified privacy issues to be negotiated with individual students.

Fixing the Broken Textbook Market

The U.S. PIRG Education Fund and the Student PIRGs released a second edition of their report on textbook costs this summer, titled Fixing the Broken Textbook Market. Some of their findings can be view here.

A 2019 survey of Fresno State students asked similar questions and found that three in four students skipped buying course materials, even though they worried it would hurt their grade, and over half said textbooks costs affected which courses they decided to take.

Open Educational Resources (OER) offer many advantages, including that they provide free, permanent access for students. If you are interested in using OER in your courses, please contact CFE using this form.

Teaching Online at Fresno State

APM 206 Policies and Procedures on Technology Mediated Courses and Programs was approved in Spring 2018. The policy states that faculty who will be teaching online or blended courses (beyond 20% of the entire course) must successfully complete the required online training.
Fresno State has adopted the CSU Quality Learning and Teaching Instrument (QLT) for quality assurance of online and blended courses.

March QA training is open for registration!

Introduction to Teaching Online Using the QLT Instrument (Q1): This course is an introduction to the pedagogies and strategies of successfully teaching in blended-online formats, weaving the 10 sections of the CSU QLT instrument throughout. This course is intended for anyone who is interested in and/or plans to teach a blended or online course.

Reviewing Courses Using the QLT Instrument (Q2): This course provides an in-depth experience with the QLT instrument and how to use objective-based examples to support reviewing and informing blended-online courses and is designed for those with prior knowledge of and practice with the QLT instrument.

Advanced QLT Course in Teaching Online (Q3): This course is in alignment with course objectives, incorporates social presence, equity-minded strategies, active learning pedagogy, and formative assessments. Participants will complete a QLT Core-24 self-review on their own course for reflection to guide them as they progress through the course and assist in the development of their final project.

For more information on the courses and to register visit the QA training page

Technology Tip for Today
Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus Lockdown is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas and prohibits the user to print, copy, transverse to another webpage or access other applications. This feature is readily available within Canvas and can be easily enabled for any quiz.

If students are unable to log into Canvas through the Respondus Lockdown browser, please leverage the remember me for 12 hours feature to verify through 2-Factor Authentication.
