Termly News from Development and the Farleigh Society
Brand New for all the Farleigh Family

The leaves may have fallen now that Christmas approaches, but at Farleigh our iconic tree remains evergreen, a symbol of the strong roots and spreading branches of our community.

Farleigh Tree is a brand new termly newsletter for all parents, past parents, alumni and friends of Farleigh. In it you will find news about the school's projects and plans for the future, plus details of new events and opportunities for the whole Farleigh community (look out for Farleigh Tree activities).

With a very busy term almost behind us, I hope that you will enjoy finding out about some of the projects and transformations recently undertaken here at Farleigh - and how these are continuing to evolve.

Eleanor Marsden, Director of Development

Welcome to our World:
Planet Farleigh

Farleigh School is at the centre of a multi-generational, diverse community. We want to be able to offer something for everyone who is linked with the school, from young alumni to the grandparents of current pupils, and everyone in between.

We would love to hear from you about any ideas you have for making 'planet Farleigh' an even better-connected place. You can email your feedback here or help us by taking a short online survey and we will use your input to shape a programme which meets as many of your interests as possible.

In the meantime, we would be delighted to have your company for the inaugural 'Farleigh Tree' event:
Icons at Christmas: Seasonal drinks plus illustrated talk by icon painter, Hanna-Leena Ward

Enjoy seasonal drinks and mince pies amidst the work of icon painter, Hanna-Leena Ward. Hanna has a Masters Degree in Sacred Traditional Arts from The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and regularly teaches icon painting in Bethlehem.

Hanna will display some of her work and give a short talk about her work and methods. She will also be on hand to answer questions.

This particular talk is open to all current and past parents and alumni but tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve your space, please click here.

Invitation: Celebrate the Library's Next Chapter!

Current parents are invited to drop in between 5.30pm and 7.00pm on Friday 4th December to officially celebrate the re-launched Library. There will be informal recitals by some of the winners of our Poetry Café, plus a chance to learn about forthcoming Farleigh developments. Light refreshments around the Christmas tree and in the Craigmyle will be available; guests are welcome to stay until 7.00pm or move on to the pre-show drinks at 6.30pm if attending The Lion King.

Please let us know in a few clicks here whether you can come.

Farleigh wins SpringBoard Bursary Accreditation

The SpringBoard Bursary Foundation has recognised Farleigh's high standards and excellent pastoral care by awarding us accredited status as one of only 30 UK schools to achieve this. An acclaimed national charity, SpringBoard promotes social mobility by providing boarding places for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Pupils are carefully screened for suitability and placed at accredited schools.

Farleigh has committed to work with SpringBoard over the coming years and support deserving pupils, as and when we have raised enough funds to offer full bursaries. This aims to be a '110%' grant: that is, philanthropic support to cover fees and also allow the child to participate in relevant aspects of Farleigh life without finding themselves at a distinct financial disadvantage.

We have received generous funding  from the family foundation of one of our past parents to kick-start our life-changing bursaries programme. This gift allowed our first bursary recipient to join us this September and we hope to be able to offer other deserving children similar opportunities in the coming years.  (More information will be available in 2016.)

Thank you to all those who made it to the Farleigh Society annual pub reunion at The Prince Albert in Battersea on Tuesday 22nd September. A lovely evening was had by all.

Farleigh Society Needs You!

We look back at another excellent Farleigh year:  There have been some wonderful reunions, most recently in Battersea for our pre-2006 leavers, and many more alumni and past staff have met up through the Society.  There are plenty of reunions planned for 2016 so please do come along to say hello and encourage your Farleigh friends to join you.

We always love to hear from you and keep in touch, so if you have recently moved house or have any news for the next Newsletter, please let me know.

Diana Nelson, Secretary of The Farleigh Society

News Update:
A Musical Note

Provision of updated music facilities at Farleigh has been high on the list of priorities for a while, so it is with great pleasure that the school recently confirmed that it will start building a new music school, adjacent to the science classrooms, in January 2016.

Works will be undertaken until the summer with the hope being that the block will be completed soon after the start of 2016's new school year. Opportunities to learn more about getting involved with the project will be announced soon.

Marcus Reeves, Director of Music

Thank you to everyone who donated to the 2015 Leavers' Gift for three new pews for the newly-extended Chapel. Plaques have now been mounted on these pews recognising the generosity of our out-going year group.

Farleigh Adopts Payroll Giving

Staff at Farleigh are now able to sign up to Payroll Giving (Give As You Earn or workplace giving).

Many employers now offer this scheme to staff, who can make donations to any charity of their choice. Payroll Giving donations are deducted before tax so each £1.00 given only costs 80p; for higher rate tax payers, this reduces to 60p.

Farleigh is committed to promoting giving and is delighted to be able to offer its staff an easy way to support the charities of their choice.
If you know of others in the Farleigh family who would like to stay in touch, please forward them this email and ask them to contact us with their up-to-date contact details.
