As we close out the 2015-16 academic year and put the finishing touches on our annual reports, please remember to take a few simple actions: PAUSE, take a deep breath, and reflect on your professional accomplishments. Hopefully, as you look back at this past year, you like the view!

In this month’s issue, we recognize all of our faculty selected by their peers to receive a TIP, RIA, or SoTL award! And we especially congratulate our colleagues who won more than one award, and are planning their next cruise, home renovation, or just put in their order for a Tesla... If you see a familiar face in the list of awardees, drop in and congratulate them – they will probably “buy” you a cup of coffee!

In this issue, we also honor the 28 members who were inducted into UCF’s Scroll and Quill Society in April, as well as celebrate the 30 faculty members who graduated from our 2015-16 inaugural Academic Leadership Academy.

As you venture out this summer, good luck finding "gold nugget" moments. No matter where you find yourself – a classroom, conference, UCF abroad experience, a family reunion, or even your backyard pool – we hope that you THRIVE!

This past semester, UCF's COACHE Strategy Committee was hard at work making recommendations in five areas of improvement identified by their colleagues: Appreciation and Recognition, Departmental Leadership, Nature of Work, Personal and Family Policies, and Promotion.

Now, you have the opportunity to vote on these recommendations and suggest other strategies YOU believe will have the greatest impact on faculty. Please complete our brief survey by May 31 by clicking here.
A second round of our Faculty Cluster Initiative has just been announced, which will add two to four new interdisciplinary faculty clusters in academic year 2017-18. Pre-proposals for faculty clusters are due on Sept. 21, and should incorporate multiple disciplines and units across UCF.

The next information session on this second round of faculty clusters is planned for early in the Fall 2016 semester. The request for proposals with details and deadlines is available
here.
The University Travel Committee has voted to change its approach to the ORC-managed travel program. Starting now, all funds will be strategically allocated toward a "Faculty Travel Grants Program." If funded, the travel grant will match 1:1 any monies contributed for a total of up to $500 for domestic and $1,000 for international, which can be used for travel, lodging, or conference registration. Click here for more information.

Faculty Spotlight

Desiree Díaz, PhD, RN-BC, CNE, CHSE, joined UCF as an assistant professor in Fall 2015. Previously an associate clinical professor and director of clinical simulation and resource laboratories at the University of Connecticut, Díaz came to Orlando looking for new opportunities in simulation and healthcare.

Since joining UCF, she and her colleagues have
launched a new graduate nursing and healthcare simulation program - the first and only program of its kind in Florida.

Díaz's research combines the cutting-edge technology of simulation with the deeper human emotion of empathy to improve care for under-served patients and populations with healthcare disparities, such as inmates and limited-English proficient patients.

The Academic Leadership Academy, offered through the Office of Faculty Excellence, held its first “graduation” on April 29. This program provides an introduction to academic leadership and an opportunity to interact with senior administrators and develop a network of peers from multiple disciplines.

Congratulations to the inaugural 2015-16 ALA class! More information about the Academic Leadership Academy, and other professional development opportunities offered by Faculty Excellence, can be found here.
The newly re-launched Scroll and Quill Society held its first induction ceremony on April 19. At the ceremony, 28 new members were recognized for their achievements in research and creative activities, and 18 Legacy members (inductees of The Quill or The Scroll in the 1980s or 1990s) also were honored.
Tuition Waivers Are Coming! During the last round of collective bargaining negotiations, the university agreed to allow in-unit faculty to transfer tuition waivers they may not have used to their spouses or dependent children up to age 26 by Fall 2016. The university is working hard to meet this deadline. However, because the CBA article that contains this provision is currently being renegotiated, the terms and timing to implement this benefit may change. Stay tuned for updates this summer!

In the next issue, we'll explore how faculty, academic advisors, and student support staff are working to improve the success of our transfer students, who make up more than half of UCF's undergraduate population.
