Listening is Just the Beginning

UCF’s desire to create a nurturing culture for faculty led to the launch of the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) survey in 2015. It’s a tool used by institutions to gather faculty workplace perspectives. Our spring 2015 results, strategies and outcomes are available here
 
The survey was administered again in Spring 2018, and our results are in! Good news: we’ve improved. You said our strengths were senior and faculty leadership, clarity of expectations and policies surrounding tenure. We also heard where we can improve: department collegiality and the nature of work, in the area of teaching.
 
Our faculty-led priority setting committee met to help narrow down the areas we will address with specific strategies, and our strategy committees will set us on a path to solutions. As our action plan progresses, you will hear more from me and I want to hear more from you. For now, you can check out this page to see the results
 
It is our job to ensure we are providing you with an environment in which you feel engaged, challenged, and rewarded with opportunities to advance in your careers. Let’s keep the conversation – and progress – going.

Twenty-two faculty members were inducted into UCF’s Scroll & Quill Society on Oct. 30. This year's group features experts in a variety of topics, ranging from human-computer interaction to youth theatre to fairness in the workplace. We are proud to have over 100 members in this prestigious society. Congratulations to all!

Is Your UCF Alert Updated?

UCF Alert is a system of tools used to notify the UCF community of a variety of emergencies, from police activity to severe weather. The system includes mass notification messages, www.ucf.edu updates, social media posts, indoor and outdoor sirens, and more.

Meet the Marchioli Award Winner
 
Dr. Robert Borgon, associate professor of medicine at the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, received the Marchioli Collective Impact Innovation Award on Nov. 6. The award honors faculty or staff members for innovative initiatives that align with the university’s Collective Impact Strategic Plan.

Borgon's PILOT (Peer Instruction and Laboratory Occupational Training) program gives undergraduate students experiences typically afforded only to graduate students. Some 360 students – about 30 per semester — have gone through the program since it began in 2009.

Mindi Anderson, an associate professor at the UCF College of Nursing, was recently inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Anderson was selected for her significant contributions over the past decade to advance nursing education through simulation best practices. She is one of 195 distinguished nurse leaders in the 2018 class of fellows. Academy fellows include leaders in hospitals, government, academia and the scientific community and represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 29 countries. The inductees were honored Nov. 3 during a ceremony at the academy’s annual policy conference in Washington. Congratulations, Dr. Anderson!

Non-Tenure Earning Community Spring Dates

Our Faculty Non-Tenure Earning Communities had a successful semester. The group formed action teams to tackle different projects including clarity on promotion criteria and defining leadership. There is also a Webcourse set-up to keep communication going until the community meets again in January. See our Spring 2019 dates
 

Spring 2019 Marchioli Award

Each fall and spring semester, one faculty or staff member nominee will be recognized for developing and implementing an innovative program, initiative or project that’s helping our university achieve the priority metrics from the Collective Impact Strategic Plan.

This award was created to recognize and celebrate individual or small team contributions already underway that can be scaled across the institution for greater impact. Awardees will receive $5,000 (either cash or grant) to help them continue their work. Learn more

New Women Faculty Mentoring Community

Applications are now open for the Spring 2019 New Women Faculty Mentoring Community. If you are a female faculty member who has been at UCF for four years or less, we encourage you to apply. Topics covered throughout the semester include: career mapping, career-life balance and working with media. Learn more
Karla Amaro, IT Business Analyst

Even though you might not know her name, Karla’s work has university-wide impact. She leads electronic system projects behind the scenes. Some of her projects include the promotion/tenure system, incentive awards and faculty data panel. On any given project, Karla works with multiple units for collaboration. A fun fact: Karla is the voice behind the promotion and tenure process videos! Each video takes three days with the help of the Center for Distributed Learning. She loves streamlining processes and making them easier to understand. With over five years of experience and a bachelor’s in computer science, we are happy to have Karla on our team. She is a strong asset to our team and to you!
