A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTORS

January 9, 2020
Dear Friends;

How very much I appreciate your prayers and well wishes this past week.  We continue in the healing process, and your prayers are uplifting us in ways that we ourselves cannot explain. Thank you for your love and caring compassion.  Continue to pray for one another, for the church, and for our world as this first week of 2020 comes to an end.

This Sunday we begin a sermon series that is so very timely - NEW PLACES FOR NEW PEOPLE.  With our Making Room construction at a close, and as we understand that the overall trend in church connection is lower than ever, we look at the story of scripture, the actions of Jesus, and we learn how the church might reconnect with our world in ways that bring healing and peace.  While I am not yet sure if I will be with you physically this week, I am preparing the sermon, so that even in my absence you might be able to hear my words and I can share with you thoughts from scripture on this critical topic.

The United Methodist Church has been very much in the news with the announcement of a proposal for General Conference 2020 that makes way for various expressions within the church.  I want to remind you of a few things as you read and listen to different interpretations of this action:
  • this is one of several proposals that is going before General Conference in May. What makes it newsworthy is that it was drafted with representation from differing perspectives and professionally mediated.
  • no proposal becomes church law until it is voted on by General Conference
  • if you would like to read the proposal and supporting materials, click here to go to the FLUMC webpage article which includes links to all that material.

Finally, and this is important, the Strategic Planning Team is using the month of January to gather information from the congregation about the future of Saint Paul's UMC.  During the month, a total of 8 listening sessions will be held to hear from you.  While we identified approximately 70 persons in the congregation to specifically invite into these conversations, ALL are welcome to participate.  You may use this link to register to attend ONE session and lend your voice to the Strategic Planning Process.  There are sessions scheduled at all different times of the day to accommodate as many as possible.  Thank you for your input.

Thank you again for being the church!

Blessings,

Kandace

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SAINT PAUL'S

Climate Justice Class
begins January 15
Climate impacts from extreme weather like massive hurricanes and fires are in the news and Greta Thunberg was just named Time's Person of the Year for her climate justice efforts. Join our Creation Care team as we learn how people all over the world are responding to the climate crisis, and how Christians are mobilizing to help those in harms way. You can register for this Wednesday evening class at https://saintpaulsumc.breezechms.com/form/78bdb7.

Friends and strangers class with each other over issues large and small. Coworkers have conflicts in the office.  Married couples fight over finances.  People demonize each other on social media.  Is there any hope for civil discourse?

The course will provide a strategy for having difficult conversations, helping us move from contentious debate to constructive dialogue. Using insights from Scripture and communication theology this class will provide practical ways to manage disagreements and resolve conflicts.

We can disagree without being disagreeable.  Find out how.

Class will meet Wednesday, January 29 - February 19 in room 326.  Please register for this class at the link under Breeze forms.
