A Message from Pastor Kandace

January 10, 2019
Dear Friends,

25 folks are signed up to head over to Marianna this Saturday to help out with the removal of debris from Hurricane Michael!  This is such great news – and to think that an additional 4 or so folks will be providing lunch for this crew as well.  I am so very proud of the enthusiasm and energy you have provided to helping out those impacted by this storm…keep up the very good work!  Also – did you know that our Christmas Eve offering totaled just over $4,400 which will also go toward Hurricane Relief; mostly in the form of supporting our teams that will go to the panhandle for longer rebuilding efforts.  Part of our vision statement is that we will be a church that will help to alleviate suffering in all its forms.  Thank you for living into this vision!

This weekend (and the following weekend as well) there will be a district training event for Hurricane Relief efforts.  Please take note of these opportunities below, and see how you might be part of the larger work.

This Sunday I am beginning an 8 week sermon series called Both/And: The Theology of John Wesley.  We, as United Methodists, hold a wonderful balanced approach to considering things of the faith, and this series will outline some of those creative tensions that make up who we are as a people of faith. I hope you will join us – and perhaps invite someone to worship with you!  Maybe you can invite them to ‘come and see!’

I have been enjoying the opportunity to meet with various Sunday School classes, and to speak about the upcoming called General Conference of the United Methodist Church.  Please continue to be in prayer about this conference, especially for those delegates who will be participating.

Music time for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and the mommies who love them to come together and play together musically. This music class targets developmental milestones through singing, chanting, instrument playing, signing, and movement. Class will be led by Stephany Bryant, a board-certified music therapist. For more information contact Jill Merryday, Director of Children's Ministries in the church office.

Did you start saving last January for this year's Christmas spending? Are you certain you're going to spend less than you make this month because you're living off of a budget? Do you frequently not see eye-to-eye with your spouse about money matters? Julie and William Hatfield will lead this course starting in January. Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University class will help you take control of your money and your future. This nine-week class will meet at SPUMC on Wednesday nights starting on January 9, with free childcare if needed. (Time is 6:30 to 8:00, and we won't run late.) This class is great for singles and couples — but spouses must attend! The course costs $129 but we can’t emphasize enough how worth the price it is. If you have already taken the class and have your kit, come back for a refresher. If you need to order a kit, please call the church office and sign up to attend. For more information, contact Peggy Benton in the church office.

Hurricane Cleanup

We had a successful day cleaning up hurricane debris in Marianna on Saturday, December 22. We came back with the clear and certain knowledge that there is great need in Marianna and in other areas of the Panhandle that were hit hard by Hurricane Michael.  Without question, the work of cleaning up after Hurricane Michael continues.  In that regard, Jim McConnaughhay and Don Griesheimer will lead another team to Marianna, Saturday, January 12 to once again assist with debris removal that is so desperately needed.  Team members should bring work gloves and any debris removal equipment they might have - chain saws, shovels, saws, pitch forks, rakes, wheel barrows, etc. in order to facilitate debris clean up. As before, Meg Guyton has volunteered to provide lunch.  Bring what you want to drink.  Those who wish to participate on January 12 contact Don Griesheimer ( Please include your email address and cell phone number in your email.  Additionally, it is not necessary for participants to be a member of Saint Paul’s.  If you know someone who just wants to help and is not a member, invite them to be a part of this team.

Please Join Us! Volunteers and volunteer leaders are needed to assist with outreach in the NW district to the communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. Training is this Saturday, January 12th (8:00-2:30) at Tallahassee Heights UMC.
Volunteers will have an immediate opportunity to begin outreach after training followed by lunch back at the church. There is no charge for this training and all are welcome to attend. Registration is required to make sure we have enough materials and lunch for everyone. Click here to register.  Training will be provided by UMCOR and the Disaster Recovery Ministry of the Florida Conference.
There is also an Early Response Team training scheduled at Trinity UMC on Saturday, January 19th, for those who are interested in certifying to serve as early responders in disaster on behalf of UMCOR and the Florida Conference.  For more information or to register, click here.

Progress continues on Phase One of our MAKING ROOM Project.  We did run into two unexpected issues - termite infestation (which is now resolved) and a water intrusion issue that requires additional barriers to be installed to prevent future damage.  We will keep you posted on the progress.
