One of the national Healthy Families New Zealandpriorities is to improve the health and well-being of people in workplaces, and Healthy Families Rotorua has prioritised Māori Systems Return.
At a national level Healthy Families NZ sites have been applying the free framework WorkWell which focusses on achieving better workplace well-being.
The Healthy Families Rotorua site has been prototyping the application of the Māori system Maramataka and WorkWell side by side, with AWHI Rotorua who are a collaboration of Healthy Families Rotorua, Te Arawa Whānau Ora Collective and Kōwhai Health Associates.
Mapihi Raharuhi, manager for Healthy Families Rotorua says, “The Maramataka system is applied in conjunction with WorkWell’s workplace well-being framework. The framework provides a structure to monitor and review the workplace plan whilst Maramataka guides all activities according to the lunar phases, to support staff to achieve health and well-being in the workplace.”
“Ngā Pātaka o Te Arawa, a Maramataka advisory group assists the Healthy Families Rotorua team to maintain the Maramataka system’s mana or integrity.”

HOW IS MARAMATAKA BEING APPLIED TO WORKPLACE WELL-BEING?
Maramataka assists in optimising all activities from strategic planning, to optimum days for holding hui, to report writing and right down to individual and/or group activities in your workplace.
Healthy Families Rotorua has been working in this space for more than two years. Maramataka set the base for Healthy Families NZ’s Māori Systems Returnapproach which has a focus on normalising traditional practices to increase the health and well-being of our communities.
Healthy Families Rotorua also holds a position of working towards normalising traditional practices such as Maramataka to environments that increase community wellness where we live, learn, work and play.
We believe that innovative practice to attain good health for our communities is embedded in cultural knowledge and concepts of well-being. Returning to our traditional practices and cultural frameworks often sustained our whānau in times of challenge and prosperity.
UNDERSTANDING THE WAY WE SPEAK
Māori Systems Return inspires innovative ways of being by applying traditional practices that have stood the test of time and continue to prove relevant and applicable in contemporary times.
