Hark the glad sound: the Saviour comes!

This Sunday is Advent Sunday and the start of a new Christian year.  We'd love to see you and yours and there's no better place for us to begin a New Year than all around the altar together.  The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 8am, 10am and (at Besthorpe) 11.30am this Sunday.

At the 10am Parish Eucharist, the first candle on our Advent wreath will be lit, there'll be Sunday Club for our children and beautiful Advent music.  Join us!
The choir is hard at work tonight practising for The Advent Procession: one of the year's most powerful services, this Sunday at 6.30pm.  It's a beautiful candlelit sequence of readings, favourite Advent hymns and choral music including pieces by Ord, Palestrina, Praetorius, Gibbons, Britten and Charles Wood.  We'd love to see you there!  This would be a great service to bring a friend to.
Need some space to think, reflect and pray this December?  Want to do more than just canter towards Christmas?  This Wednesday (5 December) our Advent Quiet Evenings in St Mary's begin.  We start with the Blessing of the Light at 7pm, followed by silent prayer in candlelight; at 7.30pm there'll be a reflection led by one of the priests, followed by more silence; at 8pm the Eucharist will be celebrated.  Feel free to drop in and out; come for any part of or all the evening.  These Quiet Evenings continue each Wednesday until Christmas.
Weekday Eucharists during Advent: Wednesdays 8pm, Thursdays 10am.  A good way to mark this season of prayer and preparation.  Come, Lord Jesus!
St Mary's Grand Christmas Draw offers a stupendous array of prizes.  Tickets are available from the Church Office or Dorothy Woolliscroft; please take and sell them as widely as you can, returning money with counterfoils in the envelope provided.  All money taken for tickets goes to church funds.  The Draw takes place on Saturday 15 December.
A tea party will be held in the Church Hall on Boxing Day from 2 to 5pm.  Please extend an invitation to any of your neighbours who may be alone on that day.  Ask them to ring 01953 456211, leaving a clear message with their name and contact number.  If any member of the Church Family would like to help (lifts, food, washing up, playing the piano...), please contact Dorothy Woolliscroft.
We warmly invite you and yours to celebrate with us this Advent, Christmas and Epiphany and we've got a huge array of services and events at which you're most welcome.  Please click here to see the full programme for the season.
Posada 2018:  In this Mexican tradition, the figures of Mary and Joseph travel between our homes night by night during Advent.  As the Holy Couple is taken to a new host each night, simple hospitality is offered to those bringing them, to build up our Church Family fellowship and remind us that when we welcome the stranger we welcome Christ himself.  There are still several vacant nights: sign the list in church to choose when you'll welcome the Holy Couple to your home.
This Advent we are supporting the John Aves Education Project.  JAEP, in memory of Canon John Aves (Rector 1982-99) funds young people from Dheisheh Palestinian Refugee Camp in Bethlehem to study for an undergraduate degree at Al Quds University, Jerusalem.   Christmas cards in aid of JAEP will be on sale this Sunday, our donations for greetings in the Benefice Christmas Card will go towards JAEP, and Anne Aves, Fr John's widow, will be at the Parish Eucharist on Sunday 9 December to give us an update on the Project's work.
We're delighted that The Revd Andrew Slater will join the Staff as Assistant Priest in time for Christmas.  Andrew, who was Churchwarden at St Mary's before Ordination and has served as Curate at Wymondham Abbey, will be licensed by the Bishop of Thetford at a special Eucharist on Thursday 20 December at 10am.  Please pray for Andrew and Jo as they prepare to (re-)join us.  Click here to read a letter from Andrew.
All members of the Church Family are invited to a mulled wine and mince pies evening in aid of Christian Aid on Thursday 20 December from 6 to 8pm at The Firs, Silver Street, Besthorpe, the home of Bobbie Aughton.  So far this year, we have raised over £4,050 for the work of Christian Aid.
The Sunday Club Nativity Play will be performed during the 10am Parish Eucharist on Sunday 23 December.  All children & young people are welcome to take part: the rehearsal takes place during Sunday Club the previous week, Sunday 16 December.
Carol Services take place on Sunday 23 December at 3.30pm in All Saints' Besthorpe (followed by refreshments and a visit from Father Christmas) and at 6.30pm in St Mary's (followed by mulled wine and mince pies).  These are excellent services to bring your friends to, so please do!
