Welcome to the Latino Academy Newsletter!

Thank you for reading

Thank you for reading the Latino Academy's newsletter. In this newsletter, you will learn about the events and the opportunities of the Latino Academy. The Latino Academy of Workforce Development is a culturally competent, bilingual adult education and employment program. The Latino Academy’s unique ‘education through community’ approach works closely with students, responds to the community’s educational needs quickly, and creates pathways to improved education and employment for the Latino community.

The Latino Academy's approach has demonstrated tremendous results within the initiative’s first four years, growing from a small offering of language and job skills classes initially, to a community of over 800 learners participating in, job skills training, GED and pre-GED classes, ESL language courses, computer classes, and employment development. As an emergent leader in bilingual training and education, the Latino Academy is a vital resource both for its students and the broader Madison community’s effort to create economic opportunity for all of its members.

Thank you for your support of the Latino Academy and for all of your help serving the community.

Latino Academy Programs

Employment and Training

The Latino Academy has a new Bilingual Construction Program starting on June 15, 2015. The program is open to 15 participants who have an interest in the construction industry. The program will run for three weeks from 9am-2pm, and in the third week, participants will be compensated for on the job training with Steven's Construction. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer at the Latino Academy, 608-709-6285 or email jennifer@latinoacademywi.org.

Education
Through its Bridge to Vocational Education project, the Latino Academy is seeking to increase the number of Latino adults in Dane County enrolling in, and earning certificates and degrees from Madison College. Madison College is seeking to partner in implementing this project due to the success of previous partnerships with Latino Academy, including ongoing GED programming, and because Madison College sees this as a tremendous opportunity to increase the number of Latino students accessing bridge programming and post-secondary education. Latino Academy and Madison College see this project is an important step in strengthening the emerging pathway from Latino Academy’s community-based education and employment programming to advanced vocational education at Madison College.

The "Puentes" program will begin August 30, for students who want to prepare for a technical college career. For more information about either program, please contact Omar at 608-709-6318 or email omar@latinoacademywi.org.

WIA WorkSmart Network at the Latino Academy
The WorkSmart Network supports individuals’ career pathways, providing employment  assistance, training, career counseling, and connecting workers with employers. The inclusion of community partners brings services associated with the county’s Job Centers into the community, enabling the network to reach those who may be underserved and without services.

If you are interested in the WIA Employment Program, please contact Jessy at 608-609-1042 or email jsantiago@worksmartnetwork.org

Safety
The Latino Academy understands the importance of work safety and the Latino worker. Since its creation, the Latino Academy has provided safety courses to the community. In May, three of Latino Academy's instructors participated at a Fall Protection train the trainer program in Red Wing Minnesota.
