Media Release: Eastern Domestic Violence Service partners to strengthen legal support for women
Monday 27 June, 2016
Eastern Domestic Violence Service (EDVOS) and Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) have formalised a partnership to increase access to specialist legal services for women and children responding to family violence in Melbourne’s east.
From the first week of July, a VLA family lawyer will be located onsite at EDVOS to work closely with their team of specialist family violence case workers.
“Our new partnership and co-location arrangement will enhance support for those clients eligible for VLA services,” said EDVOS CEO, Jenny Jackson.
“Together, it will help us provide more convenient and seamless access to expert legal advice and case work services for women and children, all delivered at EDVOS, a site they know and trust.
“Initially our partner VLA family lawyer will be onsite once a fortnight, however in time we hope to increase their capacity to cater for ongoing demand.”
Tony Daquino, Managing Lawyer at Victoria Legal Aid in Ringwood, is very proud to see this partnership develop.
“As well as assisting EDVOS clients, the VLA family lawyer will also collaborate with EDVOS staff to provide advice, guidance and education through secondary consultations and professional development sessions,” Tony said.
“This is a valuable opportunity to build the capacity of both staff groups through the sharing of professional knowledge and expertise.”
This partnership is a timely response to the recent Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence recommendations.
“We are pleased to be developing client service solutions that answer the Royal Commission’s call for stronger sector partnerships that deliver a more unified, co-ordinated and single area-based service,” said Jenny.
Clients will still be required to complete the VLA intake process, but they now have the convenience of onsite legal support at EDVOS where they can see family violence advocates and a family lawyer at the same time and location.
