Stepping up our national engagement

While many of our team members were in Washington D.C. last week to attend the National Bike Summit, we learned the outstanding news that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a critical $12 million grant to help complete the Greenway in Pennsylvania (see story, below). We also held meetings with federal officials and regional advocates, partnerships that should complement our work with state and local leaders.

$12M grant awarded for Schuylkill River Trail

Pennsylvania Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey recently announced the awarding of a $12 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help fund an addition to the Schuylkill River Trail from Center City to Southwest Philadelphia. The grant will go toward connecting the trail, one of the most-used segments of the East Coast Greenway, at its southern end at Christian Street with the Grays Ferry Crescent and eventually with Bartram's Garden.

“In the next six years, we’ll see amazing improvements on the Schuylkill River Trail,” says Daniel Paschall, East Coast Greenway Mid-Atlantic coordinator. “The Christian to Crescent segment is the last major piece of the trail to be funded." Read more

Andy Clarke, longtime bike advocate, joins trustees

Andy Clarke, director of strategy with Toole Design Group, has joined the East Coast Greenway Alliance Board of Trustees for a three-year term. Clarke's career spans three decades in national and international bicycle and pedestrian policy, planning, and program experience, including 12 years as president of the League of American Bicyclists.

“What I love about the East Coast Greenway is that it’s both visionary and totally practical, aspirational and very hands-on,” says Clarke. Read more
