The Main Act: Sunset Stomp Jazz Band

Sunset Stomp Jazz Band
In 2010 veteran Indiana based entertainers Robin Hopkins (plectrum banjoist) and Kathleen Miller (vocalist) co-founded the Sunset Stomp Jazz Band, named after Louis Armstrong's tune "The Sunset Café Stomp." The band has taken the jazz community by storm, delighting young swing dancers and seasoned Hot Jazz listeners alike. They are regularly featured at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, and play at venues across the Midwest as well as Florida’s Suncoast Jazz Classic, the Central Illinois Jazz Festival, and GRUGELFEST. They have several recordings to their credit, the most recent being a Gospel album titled “Down By The Riverside.” The band: Larry McWilliams (trumpet), Dan Hughey (trombone), Michael Lucas (piano), Jesse Wittman (upright bass), John Valdez (drums), Bill James (clarinet).

An informal and swinging open social dance and open bandstand for people to give it a shot playing, dancing, or both - like this:

There's a whole lot of sharing on both the dance floor + the band stand. All up + down the learning curve, students to pro's, people picking it back up after years, everybody in between. It's always a wonderfully wide spread of age, experience, and perspective, and others hanging around, catching up, swinging out, and just checking it out.

Bring your instrument if you would like to join us on the bandstand (and bring a couple lead sheets if you have a song you want to share). Or bring your dancing shoes if you'd like to come and social dance. Or both, why not?

Excellent craft soda and beers + some other beverages. Pizza + subs across the street - and Rambling House is totally OK if you bring food in. Bring your own ... bring some extra + share it around!

NEW PLAYERS - bring your instrument and join us for a low-key and learning-friendly set at 7:30! The first hour of the night will be an extended set featuring songs that are friendly for beginners, and backed by seasoned pros.

Hit up our Learn+Play It page for tips on how this works, links to the Creole Jazz Band's fake books (concert pitch, Bb, and Eb), lead sheets, circle of 4th's, and more. Some people bring their own Real Dixieland Book (concert, Bb, and NEW Eb - check HalLeonard.com or Stantons).

If you're interested but not sure how it rolls or if it's for you, click here for videos from previous jams and more info.
