More than 1100 vets call for a ban on homeopathic remedies for animals

More than 1100 vets call for a ban on homeopathic remedies for animalsEarlier this year we asked our supporters to write to their vet to ask them to support a petition by equine vet Danny Chambers calling for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to ban the prescription of homeopathic medicines by registered vets.

After months of tireless campaigning by Danny, supported by Good Thinking, last month his petition was handed in to the RCVS with over 2600 signatures, more than 1100 of which were from registered veterinary surgeons - representing a sizeable proportion of the profession in the UK. To have gained such support from his fellow professionals is a significant achievement, and shows the depth of feeling within the industry for a clear statement from the RCVS on this issue.

With our support, Danny was able to gain significant press coverage for his campaign, including on BBC Radio 4's Today showBBC 2's Victoria Derbyshire show, on the BBC website, in the Daily Mail and in an opinion piece written for the Guardian

We await a full response from the RCVS, and will publish it as soon as we get it.

BBC uphold our complaints regarding alternative therapies
The BBC's Editorial Complaints Unit has recently upheld our complaints regarding the promotion of alternative treatments on two of their most popular shows: an appearance by the editor of What Doctors Don't Tell You on Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon in December 2015 and the positive, uncritical treatment of homeopathy on Farming Today in February 2016.

NHS Wirral CCG consultation on homeopathy closes
The consultation into whether to continue funding homeopathy on the NHS in the Wirral has now closed, and we thank all of our supporters who took part. The results should be announced next month, and we are hoping for a decision that echoes NHS Liverpool's decision in June to cease funding.
