Overcomers Outreach Turns 35
In the words of our founders, Bob and Pauline Bartosch:
"Though the pioneering work was done in 1977, the ministry of Overcomers Outreach was officially founded in May 1985 as a Christ-centered, non-profit corporation dedicated to reaching out to people within the church with problems of addiction, compulsion, or codependency. Its goals are to provide encouragement for those within the Christian community to discover additional help in their recovery through traditional 12-step groups. In addition, it offers people within traditional 12-step programs a fresh look at the “Higher Power” they have been seeking, in the person of Jesus Christ. This spiritual experience can pave the way for their return to the church of their choice....
Overcomers Outreach is not a substitute for church, Bible studies, or worship services. It is not a psychotherapy group—we refer individuals to recommended professional counselors when indicated. It is not even a “Christian AA meeting”—but is rather a supplementary program to traditional 12-step support groups, as we advocate continued attendance at these life-saving programs.
We have found that the bridge works both ways—bringing recovery tools to the church as well as pointing people in recovery programs to Jesus Christ as their Highest Power." -- from "Bridging the Gap", Overcomers Outreach: A Bridge to Recovery
As we continue to meet in the tradition of our founders, we can be thankful to be able to share their legacy. Grateful for the vision, grateful for the bridge, grateful for the providence of the Almighty God we serve, let's take a moment to reflect and give thanks.
Happy Birthday Overcomers Outreach!
