From the Director

Presenting our next issue of "a step a month". The time for "Spring Housecleaning" is here. The inventory process is invaluable tool of recovery, or any other decision-making situation.Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. - Psalm 139:23
He cares for us every day!
Jeff M.

“Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”

It’s an Inside Job - The trashcan can’t be “clean” until the garbage is dumped. It does not matter how much I polish the outside, the trash will continue to ripen unless I get rid of it! I need to examine myself to find out what brought me to this state of brokenness and offer my future to the care of God. Let us examine ourselves and repent and turn again to the Lord. Let us lift our hearts and our hands to Him in heaven - Lamentations 3:40-41

Surrendered to the fact that I cannot manage my own life in my present state, I face my fears of the future,  of change, and of my past. I pray for guidance from God and ask for suggestions from others. I honestly rely on my newfound hope that I can change. Bolstered by my faith that this is what God would have me do, I find the courage to reach out to God and others for help and to look at my past. Courage is not acting without fear but rather acting in spite of my fears. I list my resentments-who and what I don’t like, and why. I look for my part in the resentment and see where I was selfish, dishonest, self-seeking and frightened. I make a list of my faults, my fears and harms done others. I rely on God to guide me, to show me how to see things with faith in His absolute control, and fear and shame begin to leave me.

Our inventory, if thorough, is to be fearless but often, unfortunately, not painless. Much of the pain we may experience is the same pain we tried to hide or avoid through our past destructive behaviors, especially sorrow. Through acceptance of our sorrow as a positive part of recovery we can change and heal. Sorrow, and other pain, can be constructive. Paul wrote the Corinthians:
Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. - 2 Cor. 7:8-11

My "Moral Inventory" shows me where I was right and wrong in conduct. Purity is a quality of both the mind and the heart, or perhaps I should say the soul of a man. As far as the mind is concerned, it is a simple case of answering the question, "Is it right, or is it wrong?" That should be easy for me. There is no twilight zone between right and wrong. Even in my drinking days I knew the difference, and knowing the difference was the cause or part of the cause of my drinking. I did not want to face the reality of doing wrong. It isn't in the realm of the mental aspects of purity that my problem lies. I can answer the question quoted above to the best of my ability and get the correct answer.

For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. - Lamentations 3:31-33

I begin to see the errors in MY ways, and begin to see what has to change ... ME!

A Prayer for Direction
Days pass, then weeks, months, and years. Seasons change, and circumstances, even lives – it seems as though everything changes - everything except God, because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This means that His love for us is everlasting. So we may be sure of this simple Truth: We are forgiven through Christ. When we accept this truth, we believe, and our faith heals us! We were saved, are saved, and will be saved forever by our Lord Jesus, our deliverer.
Let’s pray:

Almighty God, Maker of All, we come to you in the name of Jesus, our savior. Through Him you have brought us before you, blessed in your healing, as you hear our prayers.  Lead us in Your way everlasting that we may walk in it always, loving all whom we may encounter. In His name we pray.
Amen
