Bridging the Gap Between 12 Step Groups
and Churches of all Denominations

Son Shine

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

Matthew 18:20

From the Director –

I recently attended a "fundraiser" speaker meeting. Arrange a night to “Break Bread Together” in your area. How about a Potluck/Speaker meeting? Or.maybe a “spaghetti feed” or “Taco night” - a dinner served for a modest charge combined with Bingo or board game night. Participation is the primary purpose of these events, and unity of the group is much more important than any amount of funds. We offer the opportunity to be “a part of” the miracle of Christ’s healing power while we have fun in recovery, socialize with others, promote unity within local areas, and provide opportunities to newcomers to get into service and feel "a part of" as we carry and share our message of hope.

Last week the San Fernando Group hosted a fundraising dinner for the OO Central Service Center. We had taquitos, tostadas, salads, and deserts, Two speakers and some sharing participation from several nearby groups gave us wonderful fellowship, and there were lots of prizes, too! Tickets were $10, and everyone was a winner! The funds raised and donated helped tremendously toward replenishing key tag and literature supply, not to mention helping to keep the Central Office open and staffed.

Our main goal is to have fun in recovery and share the joy with others, in His Presence.

Step 7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
“But if we confess our sins to Him, He can be depended on to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.”

1John 1:9

Definitions:
Humble: modest and unassuming in attitude and behavior; feeling or showing respect and deference toward other people; without pretension
Shortcoming-A deficiency; a flaw.

My inventory disclosed much about my flaws in character and how those defects harmed both me and others near to me. The first part of this process of restoration has to be with God. It is my relationship with Him that is the key to my new way of living. My former path led away from God and I now wish to draw near. I can begin by coming to Him in prayer, asking for His cleansing. I do this as I assume a position of humility-complete submission to God’s authority. When I seek to follow Him I acknowledge that I need His power and strength to do His bidding as replacement for my own meager attempts at control. As I offer my flaws for removal He will replace them with His fruit to carry out His will for me. My relationship with Him is based on the humble offering of my flaws and deficiencies for removal so that I may better serve Him. In essence, I ask and wait; secure in the knowledge that He will grow me for His purpose. My pride is reduced as soon as I begin this step, and in asking to be made useful to others my self-centeredness begins to fade. As my humility grows I start to become unselfish and I put the welfare of others ahead of my own, restoring my relationship to Him.

A good question to ask myself on love might be, "Is it ugly or is it beautiful?"  I am an expert on ugliness. I have really been there. I am not an expert on beauty but I have tasted a little, and I am hungry for more. Love is beauty. Coming from the depths of fear, physical agony, mental torture and spiritual starvation, I feel completely unloved, impregnated with self- pity, poisoned by resentment, and devoured by a prideful ego which has brought complete blindness.

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil.

Proverbs 16:6

When I humble myself and ask God to rid me of my flaws of character, I begin to clear a channel for His love to flow through me to others. His mercy and forgiveness flows as well, and I find I can forgive myself as well as others.

 A Prayer of Guidance
I often ask myself "Am I doing the right thing?" The answer is the same- no, but God is! He is sovereign, and will use me and others for His purpose. His “good and perfect will” is done by Him through us, as He created us to do. Our efforts, apart from God, are never “the right thing” to do – they are sin, because they are apart from God. Yet He will cause even our sinful acts to work for the good of those who love Him. Our calling, election, redemption, and salvation were by His Grace.
Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. – Romans 9:18.
We discover His truth and guidance through study of His Word and our prayers to Him. Let‟s pray now:

Father God, we come before your throne of grace to worship you and praise you to your Glory. We pray now that You would bless our hearts with the warmth of your love, our minds with the healing of your wisdom, and our lives with the guidance of your truth, as we share with others in Christ, and that You would be glorified in all the love that we may both give and receive. As you  bless us may we share these blessings with those around us so that they will know that You are Lord of all. We ask this in Jesus name.
Amen
