Overcomers Outreach
Bridging the Gap Between 12 Step Groups
and Churches of all Denominations

From the Director

The Office has settled in somewhat, and we are excited about the growth and outreach opportunities that have resulted. The ministry is moving forward with new office staff and increased workload, so God does continue to bless us. In spite of challenges with voicemail, printing, and production, we "continue to press on toward the goal", namely sharing the healing Grace of the Gospel with all who suffer. This year we hope to share a "step a month" via this media. Hope you enjoy.

“We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity”

Once I admitted that I didn’t have any power over drinking or drugging and my life had gone out of control, I felt I might be headed in the right direction - towards an answer to my “problem”. I needed something I no longer had. Wanting to live but trying to die was a crazy life, and something had to get me out!

In the rooms of recovery, I kept hearing people talk about how they had been like me, desperate and broken, but they had taken steps to learn to trust God and they got well. I believed there was a God, but I doubted He would help me, although He had helped them … maybe I could try to believe it worked for them.

Suddenly it occurred to me that I had cried out for help and now I am hearing people trying to help. And oh yeah - I haven’t had a drink or drug in weeks! Something is working for me!  So why is it so hard to believe in the reality of God?

The Bible tells of Abram - “Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.’”. Imagine packing up the household and going to a foreign land to make a future based on the belief God had spoken. The faith needed for this obedience is discussed in Hebrews 11:8-14. His faith was tested even more, when he was told to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice, but he did what he believed was right in God's sight - and God helped him!

Some time later, Moses had taken some hard hits. As a newborn he was condemned to death, so was set adrift in a basket on the Nile River - talk about powerless - only to be adopted by Pharaoh's family and raised in nobility, then to be exiled to the desert, where he survived as a shepherd until God called from the burning bush and said to Moses “I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt …. I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” So he did what God had commanded of him, and God helped him!

Well, I'm not Abram, and certainly not Moses, not by a long shot. My biggest problem was that I didn't know what to do or where to look for this "Power" and was going crazy as I wondered what to do next, and then I heard that Jesus said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

And since He is, I can have hope. I just need to believe, and He will help me!

Okay, now what do I do? What's the next Step ...

 A Prayer for the Servant
The world today seems to be a never ending contest for our attention. The media is filled with reports of violence, death, and threats at every level. We are told that we are not safe traveling, at work, or at home. Praise God we are not of this world. Our hope is in Jesus Christ and He is mighty to save. So we need only ask for His strength and guidance, then walk in confidence as we obey His commands to love all while sharing the Good News of salvation. Let's pray now:
Father God, we praise you for the opportunities you provide for us to serve you. We ask for open eyes, that we may see your image in those around us, open ears that we may receive your instruction, and open hearts that we may convey your love and mercy to others. May our hearts be humble to receive your providence through others as well, so that all increase is from you, Lord, and may you be glorified in all we do and all we receive in and through your precious Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
