Bridging the Gap Between 12 Step Groups
and Churches of all Denominations

From the Director

Presenting our next installment of "a step a month". Spring is here, a time for new starts and renewal of ongoing relationships. It seems appropriate that "Making a decision" to renew our Faith is our indicated step, reminding us that He cares for us every day!

Step 3 - Made a Decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him

In Step 1 I realized that I was living wrong, while Step 2 suggested I was thinking wrong, so I needed direction and guidance to change how I think and therefore, how I live. But do I want to change? I have walked away from many things I should have done but didn’t want to. Why not now?

Saul of Tarsus (the apostle Paul) was “still breathing threats and murder against the disciples” as he was heading to Damascus to further persecute Christians when Jesus appeared to him in a blinding light. After being led to a man in town, his sight was restored, he received the Holy Spirit, and he was baptised. From that moment, his life was surrendered to Christ. What a change it was! From self-righteous intolerance and hatred for others, he was humbled to serve his fellow man with love and faith in the Lord. He was beaten, shipwrecked, cursed, stoned, imprisoned, and chased out of town under threat of death, yet he held firm to his faith in God and carried the Good News of the Gospel to far corners of the civilized world, both in word and deed.
Paul had been a religious man, a pharisee, and a citizen of Rome, with much honor and education. But there was no honor in the hateful and barbaric way he persecuted the early church. Yet God came to him and used him in a mighty way, ministering to early church leaders and communities. Guided by the Holy Spirit, he passed in and through harm’s way many times as a testament of God’s Power.

I reached the conclusion that I am no longer in control of my life. My actions, based upon the false assumption that I would regain control of my problem, have resulted in making at least some aspects of my life unmanageable and that I need a source of strength which will give me the ability to regain soundness of judgment and to exercise good sense. When I accept the existence of that power as real and that it is directly available, I can then put my thoughts and actions under the care of that power, trusting that by applying the principles of honesty, hope and faith, more desirable results will be achieved.
In essence, I surrender, which means that I completely give up my own will and subject my thoughts, ideas, and deeds to the will and teachings of a higher power. Another definition of surrender is the “cessation of hostility” – I can stop fighting and begin accepting things “as they really are”. Through honesty about my problem, I start to shed denial. Admitting that I can’t control my problem on my own leads to acceptance that my life is unmanageable by me; that I need help. I get in touch with reality, where I discover help is real and available. I begin to hope- and reality begins to look better. When I ask for that help I begin to entrust outcomes to God, and I start to understand Him a little more.

My faith, though slight, is big enough to make me see that it is time for me to discard my reliance on my prideful ego and replace it with the steadying strength that could only come from a Power far greater than myself - God as I understand Him.

A Prayer for Trust and Faith
“Trust God” - We hear it all the time, along with “have faith”. How do we do that? We turn to Him. He is so powerful and loving that just talking about Him can lift us up. When we are caught up in this world and life seems to be against us, or our loved ones, we look to God the Father, and trust that He will see us through whatever fear, challenge, or trouble confronts us. Our “woes” are removed when we seek Him - “Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.”- Psalm 32:10
Talking about God, in praise or in the study of His Word, builds our trust in Him, but talking to God is how we build our faith. When we pray, we get answers – not always the answer we want, but a real answer nonetheless. Answers mean that our prayers are heard, and since He listens, He cares. It is by faith that we know He hears, He answers, and He cares. – “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”- Hebrews 11:6.
Let’s pray:
Father God, we praise you as the source of our faith. May our trust in You help us walk in obedience to your statutes. Thank you Lord, that you hear and answer our prayers. We rejoice in the knowledge of your Love, Your Grace, and Your Glory, forever. In Jesus name we pray.
