Overcomers Outreach
Bridging the Gap Between 12 Step Groups
and Churches of all Denominations

Happy Anniversary Overcomers Outreach

foundersDuring the fall of 1973 Bob and Pauline Bartosch found the healing and support they so desperately needed in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. They found the open sharing, genuine love and acceptance of all participants to be the solution to overcome the ravages of alcoholism.  A few years later they asked each other "Why doesn't the church do something like this?" and they felt the need for a way to offer this experience to others in church, so in 1977, they began sharing with church friends and 12 step friends, meeting regularly at homes, and then monthly at a local church. Before long, the meetings became weekly, and other new meetings were started. After appearing on Christian radio and TV programs, the word of "Christian Recovery" spread quickly, as did new meeting startups. In May, 1985, the ministry of Overcomers Outreach was officially launched. There were 16 groups at that time.
Soon after the radio and TV appearances, groups were springing up across the nation quickly. The founders and Board of Directors set up business offices and hired staff to keep up with the sprawling new ministry. Conferences and special events were taking place in various cities stateside, and before long the ministry spread to Canada, UK, and Australia, followed by groups in Europe and Asia. People were finding freedom in Christ and sharing the message of reconciliation on a global scale.
Through the years OO groups have offered loving support and genuine caring to  thousands of church members and their loved ones, who suffer either directly or indirectly from addictions or compulsive behaviors. At the same time, many in recovery have found the freedom of victory in Jesus Christ while attending OO meetings.
Bob went to be with Jesus December, 2006, and Pauline joined them April, 2019. Their legacy continues, God willing, as nearly 500 groups meet regularly to share in the healing power of the Gospel.

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

From the Director - Our fellowship consists of the groups, which meet to pray and study God's word, to help others, and to offer God's healing through the 12 steps to others who suffer as we once did. The Central Service Office exists to serve the groups, and thus, our fellowship. This office develops and provides our literature and meeting supplies, maintains the website and group directory, provides information and help via email, phone, and surface mail. As we are a tradition-based fellowship, our office should be funded by 7th tradition donation income from the groups and individuals..To this end, I am asking the groups to consider "passing the basket" once a month for the Central Office, if possible. From our FREED booklet format:
"We pass the basket to help defray costs of literature and to help support O.O.’s Central Office. In sending a portion of the group’s offering to support the O.O. Central Office, we not only have a chance to give something back for all we’ve been given, but we also provide the means necessary to carry Christ’s recovery message of HOPE to people around the world."
After the Step 1 Email (coming the end of the month), we will start our Tradition study. Understanding and following group tradition is beneficial to both the group and the individual. Our Steps, Standards, and Traditions Guide the 12 Steps of AA, 12 Traditions of OO, and Four Standards of the Oxford Group. Includes inventory questions, study verses, slogans with scriptures, and some suggested prayers. Available online, the booklet makes a good basis for study groups.

 Bridge of Believers …
We seek the Lord’s strength and guidance to conquer division. Overcomers Outreach groups provide a bridge to bring people together from 12 step groups, church congregations, and other recovery groups. Just as we are to “put on the full armor of God” individually and stand firm, we gather in groups to unify people at the foot of the Cross, where we worship and thank our Lord for our freedom from past bondage, and to serve Him by serving others. We have new opportunities to advance the Kingdom at home as well as abroad. The “front lines” of our battle are right across the street or even in the next room. We do not stand alone. United and clothed in His armor, we make up the bridge to freedom in Christ that so many seek. Let’s thank God!

Father God, we come to your Throne of Grace to thank you for our freedom in you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Open our hearts and arms to receive those you send us in the same love you have shown to us, so that we may walk together in your glorious kingdom, forever and ever.
