Walking in Love

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12

From the Director –

A paradox often expressed in 12 step meetings is "to keep what we have we must give it away."If I want respect, I must respect others. If I need forgiveness, I must first forgive others. When I love others, I am only sharing what I am receiving. Charity, kindness, hospitality are practices of love.

"give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Luke 6:38

Step 8.  Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
“If you are standing before the altar…and suddenly remember that a friend has something against you, leave your sacrifice there and go and be reconciled…and then come and offer your sacrifice to God. “

Matthew 5:23-24

Definitions:
Harmed-Physically or psychologically injured or damaged.
Willing-Disposed or inclined; prepared; acting or ready to act gladly; done, given, accepted, or borne voluntarily or ungrudgingly
Amend-To change for the better; improve; to remove the faults or errors in; correct

I want to start this step with my list of “harms done others” from my 4th step inventory and add to it those individuals I injured even though I held no resentment toward them. Even if I felt they “deserved it” I still add them. I need to list everyone I am aware of - everyone. I demonstrate my willingness to make amends through forgiveness of others as well as myself. I consider each individual and what I can and should do to repair or at least improve the position of the relationship from where I left it. If I do not want to set things right with another, I must ask God for the willingness and pray for that individual to have everything I could want for myself. I am releasing my own selfishness to grow in my relationship with God, which means I must learn to want others to prosper. As I put others’ well-being ahead of my own, I can grow in humility, unselfishness, and brotherly love for others. My old relationships will be reconciled and new and healthy ones will form. I can become willing, without reservation or expectation, to do what is right - to show my love for others.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

 John 15:13

I receive understanding and love from strangers and I make progress as I in turn give it to new strangers. It’s as simple as that. Fortunately for me, love is inspiring from the very beginning.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.  Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.  Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6:7-10

The gates of wisdom and truth are closed to those wise in their conceit, but ever open to the humble and the teachable. To discover what is true and to practice what is good are the two highest aims in life. If we would be humble, we should not stoop, but rather we should stand to our fullest height, close to our Higher Power that shows us what the smallness of our greatness is. A man too proud to know he is poor, has turned away from God with or without alcohol.

A Prayer
A love so pure, so powerful, and so complete can only be His. The Creator of all, Maker of heaven and earth actually loves each one of us so very much that He took our sin and conquered death so we could be with Him forever. That love is so very hard to comprehend when the world tells us we are so insignificant, so unimportant, even meaningless to the point of despair. But we are His workmanship and He delights in each of us! He made us for the path we are to follow, and He makes the path for us to travel in His joy and peace. Let‘s thank Him in prayer now for the joy and delight we receive through our personal relationship with Him:

Father God, You give us creation, You give us life, You give us salvation through Christ as You call us to Him. Your comfort, strength, and joy are endless, and we ask now that we may glorify You as we share with those around us all praise and thanksgiving to honor You, Lord. May the love of Jesus continue to lead us to You with joy and peace in our hearts. All honor and glory is to You now and forever. In Jesus name we pray.
Amen
