Thank you

A huge thank you to Cress, who has been covering for me (Sarah) whilst I have been on maternity leave. She has done a wonderful job of keeping everything running smoothly and she has promised to stay in touch. Cress has now moved onto new adventures (the first being on expedition in Malawi!) and I have started back after 7 wonderful months with my daughter Amy. Together Amy and I have walked over 300 miles so far this year raising money for Bendrigg as one of the '40 Fundraisers' for Bendrigg's 40th anniversary. If you fancy a challenge and want to help Bendrigg to continue offering life-changing opportunities for the next 40 years then why not join me? Take a look at our 40 Fundraisers page to see what others are doing and reply to this email for more info. Thank you!

Gail & family recently visited Bendrigg for the first time and thoughtfully shared a few photos including the one above. "We all really enjoyed it and my grandson Issac loved all the challenges and was especially pleased he got to do archery. Vic and your staff were lovely and we will definitely be back". We look forward to seeing you soon!

In Memory of John Lean
Captain John Bevan Lean OBE R.N. died peacefully at home on 8th June 2018. Much loved and loving husband of Annie, beloved father of Candida, Laura and Cordelia and grandpa to Mary and Euan. John was a Trustee of Bendrigg from 2001 - 2009 and was Chairman from 2003 - 2005. He will be fondly remembered.

Jolly good!

Congratulations to Derek Jolly who took part (and completed!) the ASICS Windermere Marathon in May. An ideal weather day mean he finished in an awesome 4hrs, 10 minutes and 23 seconds. Well done Derek and thank you for raising over £500 for Bendrigg.

Let Loose! Yorkshire

In May, the team at Let Loose! visited Bendrigg for a Disability Awareness Climbing Course. The skills learnt will help them to provide inclusive opportunities for all abilities at their centre in Hull.
First Paralysed Man to Become a Freemason

Congratulations to Jason Liversidge who, in June, became the first paralysed man to become a Freemason. Jason, who has Motor Neurone Disease, was initiated at a specially adapted ceremony to allow him to join Freemasonry and thus able to continue a family tradition - in the steps of his father and grandfather.

Up until about 50 years ago, it was commonplace for grand lodges to have a so-called 'doctrine of physical perfection.' But with the passage of time and modern day awareness of people with disabilities, numerous grand lodges have relaxed this requirement.  Some have removed restrictive rules, while others have granted dispensations for extraordinary circumstances.  "It seems tragic to turn away an excited and dedicated man, or one who has a family history with the fraternity, because he is blind, is missing fingers, or can't kneel or walk".

Jason and his family visited Bendrigg last year as part of a MCF #MakingMemories documentary and are due to undertake a challenge with a difference later this year to raise funds for Bendrigg. Watch this space!

Perfect Post

Many thanks to our postie, Garry Gould, who popped into the office not to deliver post, but to give Bendrigg a cheque for £300! Garry endured the itchiness of prickly stubble during 'Movember' last year and raised funds to help people achieve through adventure. Thank you Garry.

Volunteer Week

At the beginning of June we celebrated Volunteer Week - highlighting the amazing things our volunteers do for us on a daily basis. We showcased one volunteer each day on social media including Don (who has given his time to Bendrigg for 14 years!), Emily (who volunteers every Thursday), JD (who has been volunteering weekly since 2005), Graham (who supports our maintenance team every Monday), Filip (who started volunteering with us as part of his Outdoor Leadership degree), Adrian (who volunteers alongside groups as a qualified climbing instructor) and Kirsten (who has caught the volunteering bug and has returned 5 times since her initial visit). A big thank you to each and every one of our volunteers - we couldn't do it without you.

Birdies, Bogies & Eagles

Following the success and enjoyment of last year's Playdale charity golf event, Playdale Playgrounds decided to do it again! Teams made up of Playdale staff and local keen golfers spent a happy afternoon in the sun, putting, pitching and driving to raise funds for Bendrigg. The day took place at Grange Fell Golf Club at Grange-over-Sands and once again the glorious Cumbrian sun shone down on the golfers. Eleven teams of four played a 'Texas Scramble' format and the winning team of Paul (Playdale welder) and three Ulverston Golf Club members finished on 52.5 points ahead of the next nearest team! Thanks to generous sponsorship for the event and a host of fantastic donated prizes, the total raised stands at a fantastic £537 to date! Thank you once again to Playdale for helping more people to achieve through adventure.
