THE SURVEY SAYS
Over the summer CTA sent out a survey to all our volunteers. The goal was to seek a different perspective on how this organization sees itself. We received 37 responses. The concerns of our volunteers ranged from the issues of training, recruiting and publicity to the conduct of the storefronts themselves. We will consider every one of your comments and will make changes for the better. For those who responded to the survey, a gracious thank you is given.
IRS TO RELEASE NEW TAX FORM
Signed into law on February 9, 2018, the primary objective of The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 was to fund various government agencies. A small provision in the Act, specifically section 41106, will affect CTA next tax season. Section 41106 calls for the release of new tax form 1040SR, US Tax Return for Seniors. (Click herer for a draft pdf of this form). It is specifically for taxpayers aged 65 and over and is supposed to speed up the processing of tax information. The two page form covers all types of income received, allows for the reporting of deductions, has lines for adjustments to arrive at AGI and includes lines for credits, tax payments and amounts withheld. In fact, a review of this form looks like the form we were accustomed to seeing in the tax years before 2018. The traditional 1040 return was split into six separate forms and schedules for tax year 2018.
A finalized version of this new form should be ready by the start of tax season.
SCHOOL’S IN
The start of the new school year is upon us and CTA is ready to go back. In this case it is because we are starting our recruiting drive for the next tax season. On Tuesday, September 3, CTA is scheduled to attend New York University’s Service Fair, a chance to meet students who would like to volunteer. CTA thanks Dan Zuk, an NYU graduate and one of our newest board members, for making the arrangements.
By the way, if you are a recent graduate of a NYC based school, how about letting us know about your school? I’ll bet there are potential volunteers there as well. Reach out to us at generalinfo@communitytaxaidnyc.org.
