Message from the Dean
vincent guilamo-ramos

I would like to welcome the DUSON community as we begin an exciting new academic year. As I start my second year as Dean, I look forward to further meaningful discussions about the future of our school and the upcoming launch of our 2022-2026 DUSON Strategic Plan.

On October 10 at 3:30 p.m., we will come together for the State of the School Address. Consistent with tradition, we will review and celebrate last year’s accomplishments and officially launch the implementation of the new Strategic Plan. All members of the DUSON community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends are invited to join in the Peter and Ginny Nicholas Auditorium, Room 1014, in the Christine Siegler Pearson Building or via Zoom. Following the State of the School Address, a reception will be held in the atrium from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

As we prepare for the launch of the Strategic Plan implementation, I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support in helping finalize the school’s new mission. The feedback and thoughtful discussions have been valuable in understanding the purpose of our work, who we each are as members of the DUSON community and how our collective purpose and individual identities come together to amplify the mission of our school. For those that have not attended, please note there are two more DUSON mission discussion sessions later this month, so visit “Important Upcoming Dates” below for more information.

I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the 2022-2023 Dean’s Lecture Series where we will continue our conversations on the value and importance of the nursing workforce and the advancement of health and social equity. Visit “Important Upcoming Dates” below to learn more and RSVP.

Lastly, I would like to extend a personal thank you to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni that made my first year at DUSON not only a success, but also made me feel at home. I look forward to a great second season.

Sincerely,

Vincent Guilamo-Ramos

School Announcements
Duke Health is committed to reducing the prevalence of the influenza virus within our community. As part of this commitment, obtaining a flu shot or a medical or religious exemption is a condition of employment for all DUSON faculty, staff, instructors and post-doctoral fellows. Faculty, staff, instructors and post-doctoral fellows must receive their flu vaccinations before 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 15. Students are also required to be vaccinated.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) welcomed five North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Nursing students this summer as part of the Leading to Equitable Access to Health Professions (LEAHP) program.
Recently, six nurse practitioner residents graduated from the primary care and mental health residencies that DUSON has in partnership with the Durham VA. Soon, nine new VA residents will begin their year-long residencies in primary care, mental health, and long term care – three in each program.
