On Fire For God

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10b

Enthusiasm is derived from two Greek words: "En", which means IN, and "theos", which means GOD. Enthusiasm literally means "in God", or "God in us"! God's Word tells us, "whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might!" Ecclesiastes 9:10 and "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord!" Romans 12:11. Jesus said half-hearted, lukewarm, Christians make Him SICK to His stomach! "I know your deeds and works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either one or the other, cold or hot!--so then, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew (vomit) you out of my mouth!... be zealous, therefore, and repent!" Revelation 3:15,16,19.

Followers of God should be driven by the same compelling compassion which motivated apostles, martyrs and every great man or woman of God throughout history!  Paul summed this up - "The love of Christ compels me!" 2 Corinthians 5:14.

David Livingstone "I have found that I have no unusual endowments of intellect. but this day i resolve that i will be an uncommon Christian!"

Arnold Toynbee, "Apathy can only be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: First, an ideal which takes the imagination by storm; and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice." What better "intelligible plan" could anyone have than that given by Jesus Himself to His followers: "go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature!"? Mark 16:15. As Christians, we should be the most enthusiastic people in the entire world!

Nothing could quench Paul's enthusiasm! "Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day adrift in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from the Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers! I have laboured and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked." 2 Corinthians 11:24-27.

Where do we get enthusiasm - from the Holy Spirit! "Our God is a consuming fire" Hebrews 12:29. The Word compares His Spirit to a fire, or flames of fire. (Acts 2:3,4; Revelation 4:5; Matthew 3:11.)

As Christians, what are we here for?  To "let your light so shine before men!" Matthew 5:16.  Jesus spoke from His heart, "The words that I speak, they are spirit and they are life!" John 6:63.  That's the difference!

William Booth "Unless I go about my business of saving the souls of men with an energy and a zeal almost amounting to madness, nobody will take any notice of me, much less believe what i say and make everlasting profit out of it!"

So "whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might!" Ecclesiastes 9:10. Whatever task is set before us, the Bible tells us, "Do it heartily as unto the Lord, and not unto men!" Ephesians 6:5,6.  It's been said that triumph is 10% "try" and 90% "umph"! Like the lepers that Jesus healed in the Bible; Luke 17:14, they had to go and take the first step, then God did the miracle! Let's get on fire for God by earnestly praying and faithfully and hungrily reading His Word and letting His Truth and His Spirit inspire us. Get on fire for God today! Tomorrow may be too late!
