Nordex and Winfoor in Triblade partnership
Nordex and Winfoor form partnership to accelerate the development and commercialization of Triblade. The two companies will work together to evaluate and adapt Triblade for Nordex wind turbines.
We are very happy to be able to work with a leading wind turbine manufacturer like Nordex. It is a great company and the perfect industrial partner for us. Their extensive experience and know-how within the wind industry is invaluable to our efforts in taking Triblade to the market, says Rikard Berthilsson CEO of Winfoor.
As a potential customer, we foresee promising perspectives with respect to the technology behind Triblade. Since power output is driven by rotor diameter, increasing blade length will remain a design driver for the wind industry. We recognize the potential in the Triblade concept for reducing weight and increasing the stiffness in blade design. The Triblade design can be adapted to enable blade segmentation to overcome transportation limits. We believe these advantages would help turbine manufacturers produce significantly longer blade lengths than with conventional technologies, says Daniel Nies, Manager of Blade Aerodynamics and Structural Mechanics, Nordex.
Triblade is a new and disruptive technology for large scale wind turbine rotor blades that can impact the entire wind industry. The new technology is a 3-in-1-blade that will allow rotor blades to be longer, stronger and much lighter than current offerings, while reducing production costs and increasing ease of transport and installation. Using the same material as in standard blades, Triblade will reduce blade weight by up to 80 % and potentially make it possible to manufacture blades twice as long as today.
These are game changing improvements that gives Winfoor a unique opportunity in today’s global rotor blade market. The technology may also play a decisive role in driving the development of next generation of larger, more efficient wind turbines and to accelerate the transition to greater use of renewables worldwide.
As one of the technological leaders in multi-megawatt wind power systems, Nordex is benefiting from the trend in favour of large-scale turbines. The Generation Gamma range comprises the N90/2500, N100/2500 and the N117/2400, which is one of the most efficient series turbines for non-coastal regions. To date, over 3,600 of these turbines have been produced. With Generation Delta, Nordex is now offering the fourth generation of its proven multi-megawatt platform (N100/3300, N117/3000, N131/3000 as well as the N131/3000 for the German market). Nordex has installed around 7,000 turbines with an aggregate capacity of over 12,000 MW all around the world. With exports accounting for around 70 percent of its business, Nordex SE also plays a key role in international high-growth regions. The Company has offices and subsidiaries in more than 20 countries around the world The Group currently has more than 3,000 employees around the world.
Winfoor is Swedish company that designs wind turbine rotor blades. It is a spin off from Lund University, Sweden. Behind the company is a multidisciplinary group of researchers from the fields of mathematics, fluid mechanics and structural mechanics. The team is passionate about building a company based on vision and expertise, with the purpose of integrating new technologies in the wind energy sector. The company has developed the Triblade technology.
