News from your local Labour MP

Welcome to my first constituency newsletter. I will be sending a newsletter each month to update you on work in the constituency and in Parliament.

Since being elected to represent you, I have been setting up my offices in Westminster and the constituency, recruiting staff and I have held seven surgeries for constituents. I have given my first speech in Parliament, and asked Government ministers questions. I've also met with constituents and campaigners on issues ranging from saving our bees to catching the bus.

Just to let you know...

I made my first speech in Parliament on 5th June during the Queen’s Speech debate on the economy. I was pleased to talk about some of Cardiff Central's best attributes as well as highlighting the issues of inequality and low pay which affect us here. Watch my speech here.
At Cardiff Muslim Primary School with Jenny Rathbone AM, Mahdiya Mohamed, winner of our competition to design an Eid Card and the schools headteacher Mrs Safina Omar.
I attended an event welcoming the Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, to the UK earlier this month. It was an honour to be at the event on behalf of many Cardiff Central constituents.
With Councillor Ali Ahmed and a visiting delegation of teachers from Bangladesh at Roath Park Primary School.
I attended events run by the Climate Coalition, Friends of the Earth and 38 Degrees to find out more about the sustainability issues we'll face in this Parliament, and why it's important to save our bees and other pollinators.
Pupils at St Teilo's School in Llanedeyrn, who shared with me their ideas for education as part of the Send My Friend to School campaign on global education.

Parliament Business

I have signed several Early Day Motions - including on the Irish Equal Marriage Referendum, the EU referendum voting age, and on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). I also published my first Early Day Motion on United Nations Public Service Day.

You can see a list of all the Early Day Motions I have signed on the Parliament website here.

This month I also had the opportunity to question the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales about plans to privatise Network Rail, highlighting the effect this would have on First Great Western passengers. Read more here.
