ALWAYS QUESTION THE STRUCTURE

an exhibition by Thierry Geoffroy/ COLONEL
at Sabsay Gallery / Copenhagen
from March 30th to June 22nd 2017

For this exhibition Thierry Geoffroy / COLONEL will work in Athens and Kassel in order to question Documenta on location, focusing on its political attitude, motivations, and history.

The exhibition will develope in phases. In the first phase, the Sabsay Gallery in Copenhagen will be established as the
artist's headquarter. Thierry Geoffroy / COLONEL has a long history of transforming museums and galleries into headquarter installations: spaces created for strategy development. In the second phase, the exhibition will develop in an ultracontemporary way, responding to what the artist will discover in the field work as a result of his investigation.

The artworks will address questions such as “Is Documenta Dangerous?”,  “Why Athens?” and  “Do artists have a role or a function?”. The artist wishes with this exhibition to open a debate about the global art events' or biennials' role and influence in the society. He questions their structure and their concept, trying to find their upright motivations. The main aim of the exhibition is to train the "AWARENESS MUSCLE".

The exhibition unfolds as a converging project connected to art formats:
Biennalist, and Emergency Room.

BIENNALIST is an art format developed by the artist  Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel responding and questioning the themes of biennials as well as other staged cultural events such as Documenta, international art fairs,
festivals, and conferences. BIENNALIST takes their themes seriously and studies their pertinence through artworks and often with additional on-location interventions.

For decades the artists have questioned the canvas and the pigment. Since 60-70's, with the conceptual artists such as Marcel Broodthaers, also the museums were questioned as part of the Institutional Critique movement with Daniel Buren, Andrea Fraser and Hans Haacke. With BIENNALIST and other art formats Thierry Geoffroy/ COLONEL has since 1988 been questioning the structure of the contemporary art world with a special focus on biennales and Documenta. BIENNALIST artworks have been exhibited in museums such as ZKM Museum in Karlsruhe and Sprengel Museum in Hannover.
