The Academy of Emergency Art

The first generation of emergency artists are being graduated
this spring at Danish Art School in Holbæk.
The Academy of Emergency Art is a new international education where artists are educated and trained to become emergency artists. It focuses on working in the now, on training of the awareness muscle and on the ability to express artistically about the emergencies in the world.

The Academy of Emergency Art is training artists for EMERGENCY ROOM; an internationally recognized format developed by artist Thierry Geoffroy/ COLONEL that has been established with important international museums such as MoMA PS1.
EMERGENCY ROOM is a format for an exhibition changing every day, where artists show new artworks about today’s current topics. Approximately 450 professional artists have taken part in EMERGENCY ROOM in the last 8 years.

Now is now

The artists at The Academy of Emergency Art are trained to be awake and alert. During the educations they become experts in constantly taking the pulse of the developments in the society, spotting dysfunctions and responding immediately to them, so their reactions can be on time and artworks can be created in and about the now.

We believe that focusing on the artists' intuition, sensibility, vision and knowledge in the now might even, in an anticipating manner, be ahead of our time.

The artists are experts in expressing themselves visually and thinking conceptually thus they can often detect urgent alarming issues before others.

The audience wants to know what the artists think about the current worries. To be concerned about situations in the society is no longer just an interest for some artists, but rather a requirement for artists. Academy of Emergency Art provides, in this connection, the best tools and professional expertise based on many years of experience in this particular type of art that deals with the now and immediate expression. The alarming challenges of today, require a new art academy, where we mobilize all the available agencies in society in order to recognize, understand, express and find new ways out of urgent problems.

The awareness muscle has to be trained every day

The Academy of Emergency Art is about generating energy and training of awareness muscle every day. Just as memory, the awareness muscle also needs to be developed through active efforts and daily training.

The training of awareness muscle is of course also connected to a fast reaction, but for an artist, it's not only important to work quickly but also to be ready in time; like a sportsman who by reflex can hit the ball at the right time after many years of training.
It is, therefore, no surprise The Academy of Emergency Art also includes a gym, combining exercise with critical debate.

The emergency will replace the contemporary

Producing artworks related to the society and in "real time" is a skill that should be developed in the same way as creating painting or sculptures. It is a craft that among other things depends on the ability to detect important issues, evaluate their relevance, define a precise critical angle, draw an artistic message that can be communicated fast and can create the necessary debate.

This new competence based primarily on immediate criticism through art can be trained in a specially designed training structure, which can either be built in the form of an independent school built for the purpose or as an addition to an existing school.
Emergency art is also a category that can be integrated into the existing educational structure.

As a legitimate alternative to the established education framework, Academy of Emergency Art could be an alternative that offers the necessary tools for art students' engagement with society.

Academy of Emergency Art has its exhibition space, a media agency, a fitness center for the “awareness muscle” and an export center for artistic savoir-faire.

The education includes among other things investigation journalism, detective work, technology, mass media, sociology, statistics and logistics. There is a naturally created diversity in the learning environment among a heterogeneous group of students with each their skills as well as networks pointing to different cultural, social and professional directions in an organic way.
