Aid to the Church in Need is appealing for prayer for Nicaragua after a bishop was arrested last week, following the expulsion of the country’s Apostolic Nuncio. The Nicaraguan government ejected the Vatican diplomat from the country, demanding his immediate departure according to the Vatican.

Regina Lynch, international projects director of ACN, said: “These events represent a further escalation in a spiral of confrontation. We are witnessing an attempt to silence the Church in Nicaragua. And there is no easy solution. We need to support them as much as possible. We must pray that there may be a peaceful solution and not a further increase in hostilities.”
A report published in May 2022 found that in less than four years, the Catholic Church suffered more than 190 attacks, including a fire in the Cathedral in Managua.
Alongside the expulsion of the Apostolic Nuncio in March, the government has prohibited street processions, interrupted religious celebrations and the police have intimidated worshippers at churches. Six priests are imprisoned in the country. Please click here to read more.

What your Mass Stipends are achieving…

Fr Andriy Bodnaruk is one of almost 1,900 priests receiving Mass stipends from Aid to the Church in Need, which enable them to carry out their essential pastoral ministry. Wearing a bulletproof vest over his cassock, Father Andriy pays pastoral visits to IDPs and those who have remained in their own homes, including a blind 90-year-old lady.
Fr Andriy said: “I am doing what I did before: I serve God, the Church and our people. I remain close to the sufferings of the people. I sincerely thank Aid to the Church in Need for their financial support during these difficult times.”
