ACN has today (Friday) approved nearly 200 emergency COVID-19 aid projects to be rushed out across India amid a sudden surge in cases.

The nationwide programme, benefitting at least 140 dioceses, includes PPE – facemasks, disinfectant gel, gloves and face shields – for priests, catechists and religious, urgently reaching out to those in serious pastoral need.

The aid measures come as latest reports show a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases in India over the past week. It comes after a spell of reduced infections following a battering from the Delta variant.

The aid is critical in stopping the spread of the virus but far more help is needed to keep people – especially the most vulnerable – safe and well.

ACN’s emergency COVID relief programme includes 136 emergency aid projects and more than 50 projects providing ongoing support for priests through Mass stipends.

One of the countries worst to suffer in the pandemic, India has had more than 31 million cases and at least 423,000 deaths.

Appealing for prayer and help, Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi told ACN there is no knowing where and when the virus will strike next, adding:
“We don’t know how the next day will unfold. It is only our faith that keeps us going.”
