Speaking to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), Sister Annie Demerjian of Aleppo, Syria, has warned that “a big bomb” of hunger is exploding across the country and that the country’s deteriorating economy and shortages are causing a mass exodus.

Speaking about the danger widespread food shortages pose, she said: “The big bomb now is the hunger. The war we are fighting now is against hunger. The money we are giving them [the families] is not enough.”

Spiralling poverty, rising inflation and a stagnant job market have left ordinary Syrians living on the breadline.

Sister Annie also warned that Western sanctions against the Assad government are making life harder for ordinary Syrians.

She finished saying: “I want to thank ACN’s benefactors because all of these years they’ve shown their great solidary and support. When part of your body is suffering then the whole part feels it…Our brothers and sisters put Syria in their hearts and took action.”

Joudy, 18: Daring to dream

Joudy is on the ACN-backed Pope Francis Scholarship Programme at the Catholic University in Erbil (CUE), Ankawa, northern Iraq. Originally from Aleppo, Syria, for Joudy, it’s been a difficult road to CUE. She recalls being at school one day when a rocket landed, causing a huge explosion. The family fled to Erbil, after learning many Christians had sought sanctuary there.
The 18-year-old begins: “I was dreaming of being at a university like this and here I am.”
Joudy said: “My dream is to be an architect. I imagine one day being able to play my part in building up my city once again. I remember how beautiful it used to be.”
Four years since it began, with your generous help, 283 students are now enrolled and CUE is on course to admit 1,000 young people. CUE is open to Christians as well as Yazidis and others. Please continue to support young people like Joudy and give them a chance to fulfil their dreams.

ACN Prayers
Maira Shahbaz – an urgent prayer request
It’s nearly two years since Maira Shahbaz, the Christian girl from Pakistan, went into hiding having escaped the man who kidnapped her aged 14 and forced her to convert and marry him. More than 12,000 of you supported ACN’s petition requesting UK asylum for Maira and her family. Maira’s life is still in danger and that is why this week a letter has been sent to the Home Secretary asking her to break the logjam and find a solution so that this young Christian girl can regain her freedom. Please pray for Maira and a successful outcome for her case.
