"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them ability." Acts 2:1-4
This Sunday, June 9, is the Day of Pentecost on which many Christians celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Christian church's mission of evangelism.
"The accounts in both Acts (Acts 2:1-4) and the Gospel of John (John 20:22) depict the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples assembled together. This assembly of the disciples emphasizes an important point: From the beginning, the experience of the Holy Spirit has been a corporate experience. Individuals as members of the Body of Christ participate in this experience, but the power of the Spirit is given for the life of the Church."
~ Sharon Ely Pearson, published on the Virginia Theological Seminary blog, Building Faith.
Come and celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the life of your church this Sunday. Remember to wear red!
Some events to make a note of:
Forward in Faith ... and Hope! Our Inquirers / Confirmation program for adults and youth continues this Sunday with a focus on the Daily Offices, a means of corporate prayer and worship provided in the Book of Common Prayer. The program begins at 9:30 AM in Emmaus Hall.
Following worship, carry on the Pentecost celebration in the Gathering Space. Spend some time with your church family and visit the tables set out with important information about the life of our church:
> Mapping Resurrection: Place a pin in our Greenwood area map marking your residence. We are creating a visual representation of our place in the community.
> Take home a shopping bag decorated by our Resurrection youngsters to remind you each time you shop that those in need depend upon our support through the Food Bank.
> Summer Camps: Pick up some flyers and registration forms about a few formation opportunities at Resurrection and Immanuel Lutheran. Share them with friends, family, and neighbors. Sign up to volunteer and/or attend if you can.
Confirmation will take place on June 30 with Bishop Waldo’s visit. We will combine our worship services that morning at 10:30 AM. Bishop Waldo also will hold an adult forum at 9:30 AM in Emmaus Hall.
It is not too early to seek sponsors for our Thanksgiving Day Race to be Thankful. We could use an enthusiastic, charismatic and possibly well-connected person to help obtain sponsors from area businesses and companies. If this sounds like you and you are willing to help, please contact Kim Russell at email@example.com or 344-8009. Compensation includes a free t shirt and a great amount of appreciation.
Pastoral Care in Transition: Fr. Bolle will be available for our pastoral needs throughout his time as our interim rector. You may reach him by phone at 864-554-3240 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
