Dear Friends,

The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and continues through forty days until Easter. Christians across the globe traditionally choose a way that they will grow in faith during Lent, by either fasting from (giving up) something or by adding something to their daily lives.

For many years, I gave up something for Lent: sweets, social media, single-use plastics. One year I even tried (and failed) to give up using my car for the season of Lent. This year, in the midst of the pandemic, it feels as though I have already given up so much. So this year, I’m going in the other direction, by adding something to my life that draws me closer to God.

If you’re looking for something to add, consider joining Lutheran Campus Ministry in one of our collective Lenten practices. You could read along with our daily devotions, written by other students and friends of LCM. You could join us on Wednesday or Thursday nights for one of our Lenten conversation groups. Or perhaps you are looking to pray more regularly and want to join us for our 30 minute morning prayer service at Luther Memorial on weekdays.

Whatever practice you choose, I pray that God will bless you as we journey together toward the cross.

In Christ,

Pastor Emily

Musings from Vicar Leif:

I’ve been thinking about routines lately, mostly because of the change in the church year from Epiphany to Lent. As the mood and focus of the church changes, I often get a bit of disorientation as now we feel somber and pensive in church. And if you are someone who practices a discipline or a fast for Lent, there is a tangible change as well. What’s more, it may seem odd since a great deal, from our seasons to schoolwork, don’t seem to change either.

However out of place the marking of Lent that we practice at this time seems, it is important to our faith and self-reflection. Blessings to you as you begin your Lenten journeys!
