Winter Is Near - LETS STAY FIT! (and Warm)

Hi Everyone,
This month is going to be a long newsletter with some exciting changes coming up and news to update you all with,  so please take a quick 5minutes to sit down and read.  

So the colder months are now getting closer and the days are shortening, so there is no doubt it does become harder to wake up early for a 6am boot camp session in the dark.  I struggle with it some days too, as we are all human.  But exercise is proven to really help with the 'winter blues' and sets us up better to leap into spring and summer with better fitness than if you hibernate during winter. 

However, thats also where group training and the time commitment to a boot camp session can really help you.  Be realistic about what you can fit into your weekly schedule, but also tell yourself, the week doesn't have to be perfect with you achieving all the exercise plans that you made at the start of the week. EVERY session is one session more that will help improve your fitness and physique, so don't give up today and put off starting again until Monday, its never too late, just get along to one.  
We are also planning some new challenges for you all to help with winter motivation, so read on to find out more!
 

Winter Sees Some Changes...


April sees the time change for Saturdays Boot Camp Session from 7:15am to the new time of 7:30am just for the colder, darker months of winter.  This is effective immediately, starting on Saturday 9th April. 
 

Saturday Super Boot Camp


April also sees some changes to Saturdays boot camp sessions for the winter.   This will add some spice and change to what we do, by going to different locations around Nelson on alternating weeks.  These different locations will result in different styles of sessions which will challenge you all in different ways.  We will also introduce some new fun equipment such as tyres, ropes and water canisters to break away from our usual style of sessions.
We do hope this inspires you all to attend the Saturdays more regularly, have some fun with a team based session and adventures, while also attracting new attendees to some new challenging sessions in our region.  So spread the word and bring some friends along too. 
 

April Location Schedule


Saturday 9th April  - Our regular Tahuanui beach location - with one of the girls
Saturday 16th April - Tamaki St Steps, meeting at the bottom along Tahunanui Drive - with Nige
Saturday 23rd April - Our regular Tahuanui beach location - with one of the girls
Saturday 30th April - Botanics Park/Centre of NZ, meeting by the toilet block - with Nige

Winter Special - Prepayment Discount 

Pre pay for 3months or more (continuous) for any period between now and September and you'll receive 10% discount on the total price.  Further to this, one lucky person who commits to this and achieves the attendance they paid for over the 3 month period will go into the draw to receive a complimentary month for the same attendance frequency.  

Ie. Prepay $310 for the 3 sessions a week monthly plan, attend all 39 sessions your entitled to over the 3months (13 weeks) and your in the draw for a free month at the end of it.  Thats equivalent to a further 33% discount, so why wouldn't you!

 

Fitness Testing Is Coming 

The only way to really know you are improving your fitness and strength is to measure it.  The are many ways this can be done, so we are going to introduce a variety of different tests into some boot camp sessions spread over a week at 6- 8 week intervals.  This will begin the first week in May, which is also the first week of school term 2.  Now this is nothing to be scared about, as the only comparisons that will be made, will be from your own results.  However, if you would prefer not to be tested, come along to the sessions anyway, as the tests will provide a good workout for you nonetheless and we just won't tell you your results.  More details co come and dates to be confirmed in the next newsletter. 

The tests will be;

1min Press up and Squat Strength Tests (Cathedral and Beach sessions)

Plank Hold to Failure (Cathedral Steps and Beach sessions)

Beep/shuttle run fitness test (Beach session)

1 mile run (1.6km) - (Cathedral Steps Sessions)

Niges Cathedral Steps 300 Challenge (modified version of the Spartan 300 challenge)
50 reps each, exercises in order, Burpees, Pressups, Box Goblet Squats (weighted), Kettlebell Swings (weighted), Dips, Lunges, 5 Intervals Up/Down Steps (300), 300second plank hold (Front and Side), total time taken. 

 

One of our trainers, Laura, excitingly has started her own project alongside being a mum, taking boot camp sessions and attending boot camp sessions to help keep you all honest.  Laura's new business is running what I've been calling 'kiddy boot camp', but  actually is an early childhood based physical activity program taking place within kindy's, preschools, daycare centre's and primary schools.  The aim is to start developing structured basic physical skills such as coordination, basic movement patterns, balancing, ball skills and running which a lot of children seem to miss out on these days.  This is a great initiative as a lot of centres or parents don't offer young children the chance at this hugely adaptable age the chance to have expert instruction on a regular basis on developing these basic skills.  

So please help Laura grow this project and help her reach more kids (maybe even yours) by spreading the word or talk to Laura today about having her attend community events or birthday parties by offering games and doing similar activities at them.  Check out her website to see what its all about, www.activestarts.nz.
