Haze Watch

Jan 2018

In the News

Dear <<First name>>,

New temperature record for Singapore in 2017, another sign of climate change, is the headline news in the last couple of days. Peatlands are being cleared for palm oil production and for growing timber used in paper manufacture. When dried out, peatlands release stored CO2 and become highly flammable. We are excited to see "Buy from companies that do not engage in forest burning practices to clear land” included in the official Climate Action 2018 plan. New Haze-Free Partnerships
Siloso Beach Resort is a tranquil and rustic eco-resort located on the island of Sentosa. Recently, they switched to using only sustainable palm oil for cooking. They chose to do this not only because business was severely affected by haze episodes, but also because preserving biodiversity is one of their guiding principles.
PM Haze assisted their switch to sustainable palm oil by advising on relevant certifications and providing a list of sustainable cooking oil suppliers in Singapore. Siloso Beach Resort is our first haze-free hotel partner. Check out our list of eateries using sustainable palm oil.
Rough Beauty is a Singaporean enterprise that offers handmade beauty products such as soaps and liquid wash. For the 3-year-old enterprise, sustainable lifestyle is about taking small but serious steps towards environmental responsibility. As soon as they became aware that palm oil used in the making of conventional soap contributes to deforestation and haze in Singapore, Rough Beauty switched to sustainable palm oil.
We found out about Rough Beauty when they advertised packaging-free soaps on the Facebook group Journey to Zero Waste Life in Singapore. You can find out more about its philosophy behind the brand from our blog.
Volunteer with us!
In 2018, PM Haze will focus on mobilising communities to take action, getting more businesses in Singapore to switch to sustainable palm oil, and collaborating closely with communities in the region. Help us take the #GoHazeFree movement forward! Check out the various volunteer opportunities available this year.
