First meeting during the Russian Chairmanship
On 29-30 June, the Arctic Council convened virtually and in Moscow for the first executive meeting during the Russian Chairmanship (2021-2023). During the meeting, delegates discussed plans for the action items outlined in the Reykjavik Declaration and initial work to implement priorities of the newly adopted 2021-2030 Strategic Plan. The SAO Chair on Russia's Chairmanship
"In a quarter of a century of its existence, the Arctic Council, whose anniversary we are celebrating this year, has turned into an influential forum for intergovernmental dialogue between the Arctic States on sustainable development of the region. The Arctic States, which carry special responsibility for the future of the region and its inhabitants, including Indigenous Peoples, have been consistently working to preserve the region as the territory of peace, stability and constructive cooperation." The Russian Chairmanship priorities
A cross-cutting priority of the Russian Chairmanship in the Arctic Council is "Responsible Governance for a Sustainable Arctic" through promoting collective approaches to the sustainable development of the Arctic - in an environmentally, socially and economically balanced way. People of the Arctic
The Russian Chairmanship’s main focus is enhancing sustainability, resilience and viability of Arctic communities, including well-being, health, education, quality of life, as well as sustainable socio-economic development in the region. Environment protection
The Russian Chairmanship will continue supporting efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, increase adaptation and resilience, preserve and restore the environment, sustainably use natural resources, and preserve biodiversity. The program also includes the transition to a low-emission economy and introducing sustainable innovative technologies. Read the full text.

Socio-economic development
The Russian Chairmanship will be further promoting constructive economic cooperation in the region. This includes developing reliable energy infrastructure, sustainable transport routes, including shipping, telecommunication systems, food production, as well as improving the conditions for sustainable investment flows, encouraging innovations and entrepreneurship, business financing. Strengthening the Arctic Council
The Russian Chairmanship will continue supporting the establishment of the Arctic Council as the leading format for international Arctic cooperation. Efforts include the meaningful engagement of Observers and collaboration with the Arctic Economic Council, the Arctic Coast Guard Forum, the University of the Arctic. Among the priorities of the Russian Chairmanship is also international scientific cooperation. Read the full text.
