Hatching Results congratulates Superintendent Diane Perez and the San Jacinto School Counseling Program on receiving the Golden Bell Award!  Hatching Results is proud to have contributed by providing professional development!  Vanessa Gomez-Lee, Lead Counselor, San Jacinto, states: “A few years ago I took the position of lead counselor for SJUSD and it has been a great experience. I am so blessed to work with a great team of counselors and administrators who give 110 percent to remove barriers to learning and help all students succeed. Yesterday San Jacinto High School's Counseling Program received a Golden Bell Award from the California School Board Association. It was the only school counseling program to receive an award out of the 57 awards in state. I am so proud of the team and all the people that have had a part of it. Thanks to Diane Bryant Perez and Trish Hatch who had the vision.”

NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING CONVENING IN DC
From October 28-30, 2016, this year’s convening, Connecting the Dots: Cultural Competence, Counseling and College and Career Readiness for Underserved Youth, was conducted at American University as part of the First Lady’s Reach Higher initiative.  This was the 5th hosted convening by the Department of Education and the White House to discuss ways to support more students to become college- and career-ready.  Our very own Dr. Trish Hatch and Danielle Duarte, Director of Curriculum/Expert Trainer, were proud to contribute.
STUDY FINDS SCHOOL COUNSELORS BOOST STUDENTS’ FINANCIAL AID CHANCES
Have you heard the news?  The National Association for College Admission Counseling conducted analysis to measure the impact school counselors have on students' lives after high school graduation and found proof of school counseling’s quantifiable, statistically significant and positive impact on college access for students!!  Results demonstrated the power of meeting individually with counselors—students who met with counselors to talk about financial aid were 6.8 times more likely to submit the FAFSA than those who didn't have those meetings and students who met individually with a counselor to talk about financial aid or college were twice as likely to attend a bachelor's degree program after finishing high school. Their odds of attending college—any kind of college—were tripled.   Learn more about their findings HERE.
CALIFORNIA COLLEGE READINESS BLOCK GRANT
The California state budget now includes funding deliberately intended to support school counselors serving low income students, English Language Learners, and foster youth in college and career planning!  In June 2016, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 828 into law that authorizes the allocation of $200 million specifically for the College Readiness Block Grant.  This one-time funding is purposely designed to increase or improve services for unduplicated pupils to ensure college readiness and success; it is a tremendous opportunity for school counselors to increase efforts in advocating for underprivileged students. As districts develop local plans that must be submitted by January 17, 2017, school counselors are called to contribute their voices and expertise!
