Happy National School Counseling Week from Hatching Results! This year’s celebration takes place this week, February 6-19, 2017 and focuses public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of school counselors’ work. Additionally, our momentum as a profession is continuing as Michelle Obama again recognized the support we provide to students in her last speech at the White House for the School Counselor of the Year Ceremony. In the fourth Hatching Results Podcast, Trish Hatch talks about her experience attending the last School Counselor of the Year Event and shares suggestions for National School Counseling Week.

School counselors across the nation celebrate National School Counseling Week with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Photo Challenge, and additional resources can be found on their website. Also, check your state school counseling association for additional information or activities aligned with the celebrations.

National School Counseling Week is the perfect opportunity to appropriately shed light on our role and significance within the educational setting. Some ideas for you include:

  • Sharing information describing your school counseling program including the role of a school counselor, your school counseling program mission, and how counselors support student success
  • Describing upcoming school counseling program activities such as classroom lessons, family nights, interventions, and other work you are doing to improve
  • Using quotes from students, families, and/or school staff about how school counselors make a difference in your school
  • Highlighting program successes with data, such as the number of students who have improved their grades after participating in a study skills group, the increased number of students who are on track to graduate, or improvement in students feeling safe at school based on a schoolwide climate survey.

This year Hatching Results had an early National School Counseling Week Celebration with the Pomona Unified School District Counselors:

Trish and Danielle Duarte, Hatching Results Director of Professional Development, promoted school counseling at the San Diego Magazine Big Ideas Party, discussed further in the fourth Hatching Results Podcast:

We will continue to celebrate this week as we train school counselors in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Riverside County, California, and Northern California.

As school counselors, we don’t often like to pat ourselves on the back, as we are usually too busy giving pats to others, or we feel uncomfortable in the spotlight. However, if we don’t market our school counseling programs, the work we do, and the benefits provided to students, others may not realize how hard we are working to support students’ success. Therefore, we encourage you to get out there, share your program successes, and have a great time doing so!
