Playing Catchup

September and October have been two of Read and Feed’s busiest months. With Rock and Roast on September 15 and all of our program sites starting a couple of weeks after, we’ve been a busy crew.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers at Rock and Roast and those who helped us prepare materials, transport curriculum and supplies, and organize the mobile classrooms and the office.

Read and Feed Rocks!

Thanks again to everyone who attended our 2nd annual Rock and Roast. The event was not only fun, but very successful. The total raised for Read and Feed was almost $52,000! This amount includes everything from ticket sales, the wine wall, auctions, the appeal, and sponsorships. Our supporters are amazing.

Next year’s Rock and Roast will also be a 10th anniversary celebration, so it will be bigger and better than ever. Save the date now- November 3, 2017.

If you did not get a chance to attend or even if you did, you can check out pictures here: Have some pictures of your own? Please post them and tag us @ReadandFeedNC.

Would you like to impact the lives of elementary school students in Wake County?

Read and Feed is in Full Swing

Read and Feed has just launched its biggest year yet, and we could not be more excited! During the 2016/17 school year we will work with approximately 500 children at 20 sites across Wake County. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, children from Zebulon to Apex will develop an appetite for READING.
New this year, Read and Feed is partnering with 3 year-round schools: Wilburn, Barwell Road, and Lake Myra Elementary Schools. We have adapted our schedule at these sites to accommodate the year-round format.
We have traditionally had a break at the end of the school year, prior to the start of our summer sessions. But with this new schedule, our mobile classrooms will be on the road year-round.
The number of titles in our book club library has increased due to funds we received from a couple of small grants. We were also able to purchase additional Letterland curriculum thanks to a donation from a local church group. Our tutors have access to these resources at each site.
In addition, we’ve included a breakdown of our curriculum by the 5 areas of reading: fluency, vocabulary, phonics, comprehension, and phonological awareness. If we have been made aware that a child is struggling in one of these specific areas, a tutor can use this information to determine the best tools for working with the child.
Finally, Read and Feed was given some great tutoring tips and ideas for curriculum at a training session offered by a WCPSS staff member in early September. We are working closely with the WCPSS staff member to incorporate these great ideas into our curriculum.
