Community Leaders working with Read and Feed

It's hard to believe it's almost March already. We've been busy strategizing and making plans for 2017. Some very important people who help us with this process serve on our Board of Directors and Advisory Council. Featured below are members of each of these groups.
Mike Owens

Last year, when Mike was looking for a way to get more involved in the community, he found out about Read and Feed at a Raleigh Chamber of Commerce event. Mike values the importance of education from a young age. He reads with his two daughters, Cameron (3 years old) and Janie (10 months old), every night, and they inspired him to get involved with Read and Feed.

In August, Mike joined Read and Feed’s Board of Directors, and he is currently the co-chair of our fundraising committee with Ben Swaney. Mike is excited to be a part of Read and Feed and for the year ahead. It's a big year for us- our 10th anniversary. He and Ben plan to bring a new energy and vibe to Rock and Roast, our annual fundraising event.

As the Director of Client Development for Greene Resources, Mike is constantly meeting new people with whom he shares the story of Read and Feed. His hope is that Read and Feed becomes a household name in the community and that he can spread the word among his demographic.

What is Mike reading now? Start With Why by Simon Sinek- a book about leadership and inspiring others to take action AND The Oceanfront Treasure Hunt by Denise Blum- a children’s book Mike reads with his daughter that showcases his hometown in New Jersey

Connect with us!
Cecile Noel has been an advocate of Read and Feed since 2008, a year after it was founded. The first time Cecile heard about Read and Feed was when she was on the board of the Triangle Community Foundation, who awarded us with one of our first grants.

As a Physician’s Assistant, Cecile used to bring books to the children in the hospital and talk to their parents about the importance of reading from a young age. Therefore, Cecile was a Read and Feed cheerleader sharing and spreading our values before we even existed.

Currently, Cecile is a member of Read and Feed’s Advisory Council- a group of people with varied backgrounds who help to guide us as we continue to grow and develop our next strategic plan. Cecile hopes that Read and Feed “stays as good as we are at what we do” and that we focus on our community in Wake County because there’s a lot to do here.

Cecile has seen Read and Feed go from a one-woman show serving a handful of kids to a staff of three serving over 600 kids. When referring to our growth, Cecile has noticed that we have become more well-known and are reaching more people who can support us with their time and money.

Ever since she found out about Read and Feed, Cecile has been a supporter “following us with her heart, mind, and money”, as she puts it.

What is Cecile reading now?  The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD- a book about healing the mind, body, and brain after traumatic experiences

Poor reading skills stymie children and the N.C. economy by Jim Goodnight

If you haven't had a chance to read this article, I highly recommend it. The article highlights the reading level of children and adults in North Carolina, the importance of third grade reading proficiency, and how reading and education are critical for employment.
Mark your calendars!

"I so enjoy coming to Read and Feed each week. I have been working with the same children all year and I have enjoyed seeing their progress. They worked so hard to complete their rainbow words, and I especially love it when they help each other out!  Looking forward to continuing and seeing their love of reading grow."
