Summer updates

We have two exciting opportunities for volunteers this summer! There will be one mobile Read and Feed site at Maple Ridge in Holly Springs running Thursday evenings from June 20th-August 22nd. Let us know if you are interested in tutoring at this location or if you are able to help with picking up food and dropping
it off at the office!

We are also partnering with the Kirk of Kildaire to provide curriculum and volunteers for their summer enrichment program in Cary. We are looking for reading tutors to help with this program beginning the week of June 17th. It will take place on either Monday or Tuesday mornings. Since this enrichment program is affiliated with the USDA, additional in-person training is required in order to volunteer.

If you are interested in either opportunity, or for more information, please contact sara.thames@readandfeed.org

Ari Clayton cleans and stocks our mobile classrooms every Thursday. When we really needed someone to take on that role for us, Ari stepped up to the plate.

Summer Reading

Read and Feed encourages children to keep reading over the summer so they don't fall behind. During the school year, our participants may choose three books to take home each week for an average of 23 weeks total. That's 69 books! The children's home libraries are well stocked for the summer months, which is a key factor to preventing the loss of reading skills.

Students from low-income households with access to books over the summer see significantly more gains in reading scores from spring to fall than students from high-income households with access to books and those from low-income households without access to books.

With several books at their disposal, Read and Feed participants can continue reading with family members and going on literary adventures together.
Our May book total is in. Read and Feed supporters
donated 1,534 books this month!
On May 21, Leadership Raleigh hosted Boards, Bags, and Books at Lynnwood Brewing Concern (LBC). This cornhole tournament had a great turnout of 30 teams going head to head to win the title of champion. The winners were the Moneybags team comprised of Alex Babbitt and Ross Bell. Great job guys!

The group sold $5 raffle tickets for a weekend away at North Myrtle Beach. In addition, LBC generously donated $1 from each beer to Read and Feed.
So far, the event proceeds are $1,300+, but that doesn't include the LBC donation.

The tournament was a great success that Leadership Raleigh plans to make an annual event.

Hunter Murray,  Leadership Raleigh member:

"Our Leadership Raleigh Team began volunteering at a Read & Feed program site in January. We were amazed at the energy and excitement the children had for learning and connecting with younger professionals. From our volunteer experiences, we really wanted to create an event geared towards raising awareness, recruiting a younger volunteer pool, and also raising funds. Thus, Boards, Bags, and Books was born!

The event brought together nearly 125 younger professionals and introduced them to the Read & Feed. It was truly a pleasure to volunteer with the organization but also be part of a project that brought people together for a wonderful cause."
