Digital Learning
Thanks to a grant from Duke Energy Foundation Read and Feed purchased iPads to incorporate a digital learning component into our curriculum. We have included several apps on the iPads that are tailored to children from grades K-5. All the apps are interactive so the children can work on them with their tutors. Some of the apps include:
- Letterland apps for the younger kids that help teach the children about letters and word families
- 3rd & 4th grade fiction & non-fiction reading apps that include short stories followed by questions to test comprehension
- The Fry Words app helps children learn the 1000 most commonly used sight words such as- a, all, come, but, good, that, they, you, was
- Speech with Milo: Sequencing- helps tutors build children's language skills by working on order/sequencing of stories
- Montessori Crosswords- helps kids develop their reading, writing, and spelling skills by building words from a set of 320 word-image-audio-phonics combinations using a phonics-enabled movable alphabet
We began piloting the apps at our Rolesville site in January and will continue until the end of semester in April. The kids love using the iPads.

During February, in honor of Black History Month, Read and Feed has had an ongoing campaign called Diversify our Books. The students that we serve are diverse, and they relate to and enjoy different kinds of books. We want to make sure we have books that our kids will be excited to read.
|
We are adding 17 new book titles to our library that have African Americans as the main characters. We've had a great response to this campaign so far, but we're still trying to get 57 more books OR $313. There is still time to help! Click the button to see our campaign webpage.
