Children's Literacy in the Nation

Since July is the month when we celebrate America's independence, we decided to take a closer look at children's literacy in our nation, our state, and our county. The results may surprise you.

Read and Feed serves more than 600 elementary students each year. We want these children to be equipped with the confidence and ability to succeed in school and beyond. It is important to help children at an early age because children who are not proficient in reading by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school or not graduate on time (gradelevelreading.net).

Read and Feed helps children and provides a path to a brighter future.

  • I’m currently reading Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin. This book analyzes what separates world class performers from everyone else. Very interesting read! Christopher Meredith

  • The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon. This is a British mystery set in 1976 during a hot summer. (We can relate). A very cool and clever book. Benjie Hester

  • Inside the O’Briens by Lisa Genova. This is a heartbreaking and inspiring story about a family dealing with a terrible disease. Candace Seibert

  • A Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear. It’s a mystery set in pre-WWII England involving the murder of an author of a controversial children's book. I enjoy historical fiction. Heather Cross
