Let's do less about climate change
Dear Labor Party Members,
Before I begin, I'd like to remind all Labor Party members that we're not the bloody Greens.
Because we strive to win a majority of seats, it's important that we pay attention to what the polls say. Our values have to be tempered by shrewd calculations about what policies will be popular enough to deliver us an electoral majority.
Which brings me to the issue of climate change. You may have seen the polls during the week that showed 83% of Australians believed all coal-fired power stations should be shut, that 80% believe we're already being negatively affected by climate change, and that 71% believe that Australia should lead the world on responding to climate change.
Clearly there is a sound electoral majority in owning climate change as an issue. And whichever party does it will be in government for a long time.
But on the other hand, my mate Joel has a lot of friends. And he reckons they reckon climate change is a piece of horseshit. And he'd know, because he wears R.M. Williams boots. And so do all of his mates.
So in conclusion, we should ignore what the polls are telling us and get with the guy who reckons he knows what's what. After all, when you're deciding how to win the next election, who should you trust: a disgraced former minister or 83% of voters?
