Millinery adventures for lovers of hats

Hi all!

I am a person who likes the idea of fresh starts, and enjoys the arbitrary milestones of life, like it being the first of a new month. Even though I know that this ticking over of a made-up category for time will not actually change my temperament or circumstances, I like to think positively about what it will bring, and how much I will get done.

Also, I'm excited about October, because it brings Halloween. Even though the popularity of Halloween in Australia is on the rise, I probably won't be celebrating it in any significant way. I am, however, very fond of Halloween, and some of my making lately has been centred on this holiday. I'll be sharing some of this today, and some as the month progresses.

In today's newsletter:
  • The September whimsy design
  • Two Halloween items new to the Etsy shop
  • Sketches of some designs that didn't make the cut
  • Links to some vintage Halloween inspiration
Bridal design is something I've been pondering and planning and sketching about for a long time, but have done very little of. So I decided to make a whimsy design that could potentially work for a wedding. September, with Spring arriving and my own anniversary, was the perfect time.

With ivory silk flowers and green silk leaves, large white veiling and little pearl beads, I think it's quite charming.
A while ago I used this newsletter to find someone who wanted to collaborate with me on a Halloween creative project. Soon you will see the results of that, since my hats are currently in the care of the postal service, making their way to join the matching outfits for a photoshoot.

In the meantime, here are some of the sketches I did, that we decided not to pursue, for various reasons. Some of these hats I would love to make in the future, so please do reply to this email and tell me which ones you like!
Although I'm sure the Australian sources don't have anything on either British or American ones, I have dutifully searched Trove for you and present some Halloween party food suggestions (The Sunday Mail (Brisbane) 1933), Halloween table decorations (The Sydney Mail 1928), recipes for a Teenagers' Halloween Party (The Australian Women's Weekly 1966) and even more ideas for decorating and activities (Brisbane Courier, 1930),

Whether you are interested in buying or just ogling, Guermantes Vintage is an Etsy seller who always finds the most amazing, often museum-quality pieces, and is currently parting with some 1920s Halloween costumes that are just gorgeous. I really love this one.

After more inspiration? Pinterest is naturally a great place to go, and you can start with my own Halloween board, and I'd also like to recommend Jessica Cangiano's "Vintage Halloween Fun" board.
If you celebrate Halloween, I hope you are planning something fun and exciting! Australian readers, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful warm weekend!
